Need serious help from SGC experts

well my search for a PSA 7 Jacques Plante rookie is finally over. after a year of looking with no success, a 10 minute conversation with Mike Wentz and i found both a PSA 7 and an SGC 84. say what you want about MW, but he is a classy dealer with a great inventory, anti PSA sentiments aside. only problem is, the SGC card is beautiful (aside from centering) and the PSA card is a dog. i obviously need a PSA card for my registry, and im asking the experts here whether you think it would cross. i really dont want the PSA 7, but on the other hand i dont want to wait months for another one to come up. please let me know if you think the SGC 84 has an accurate chance of crossing to a PSA 7. here are the scans-

You should make the deal contingent on the card successfully crossing over to a PSA holder.

The danger is not the card receiving a PSA 7 OC. The danger is if PSA refuses to encapsulate the card. If that happens you are out a boatload of money.

Congrats on the pick up. I will be happy to host the pics for you. Send the jpgs to info@psasetbuilder.com.

Here's the issue to be very careful with. As you know, SGC has no qualifiers. The Tallboys are prone to getting ST qualifiers for even miniscule wax strains on the back. I have had discussions with PSA that the standard for a NM card says a minor stain is within the guidelines...but very light wax stains come back with qualified grades all the time. On this issue, they either need to change the standards or grade to the standards.

    Regards,

I didn't mean that the seller should guarantee the SGC card would cross to its equivalent PSA grade.

Rather, the guarantee should be that the card will go into a PSA holder, regardless of grade. Otherwise the buyer is taking too great a chance.

It is not unreasonable for a dealer to stand behind his product.

anyone got the pics yet, my last sgc 84 came back minimum size requirement so it is not an unreasonable request.
  • i sent them to Tom, im sure he will post pics later today
  • It's not unreasonable for the dealer to kick your a$$ if you try to return the card after it doesn't cross either.
  • The PSA card is rather ugly.

Calling the PSA 7 "ugly" is being too nice.

This card having a red border makes it tough. I must admit...this Plante card is one of the best, if not the best hockey card ever.

Don't buy either. The SGC card is way too off centered. The PSA card is horrible.

Save your money for a legitimate 7.

only problem is, there are only 7 PSA 8's, and i can account for at least 4 in private collections. ok-cards has one, but i believe he wants to sell his set complete, and is asking $8000. i dont have that kind of money. of course, i could save up for one, but saving $1000+ and actually keeping it around until a PSA 7 comes up would be damned near impossible for me

The centering on the Sgc is a tad off. But if it were centered better then the card would of been an
    88. Here is one that just sold on ebay and is only centered a little better. But the corners are not as
nice and the red section of the card is much worse. It really depends on what you want. If
you want the best then you want a nm/mt card or mint card.

Here's the Psa that just closed. Another below average 7?

Well, then if having to choose between the two, I'd take the SGC. It may be OC, but it is much cleaner. The PSA just presents very poorly with the scuffing on the red section and the staining on the left.
  • aconte, for some reason i didnt pull the trigger and hit the BIN on that PSA 7 Plante (for $900).

'55's are notorious for fading, much worse than other Parkies from the '50's. are they graded accurately according to PSA's grading standards? yes. are they graded accurately according to popular hobby opinion (placing emphasis on fading)? i would say no.

I ould buy the sgc and only cross it, I wouldn't crack it out. If it doesn't cross to psa then you still have a nice card in a anice holder

I hear you and agree 110% .... my friend aconte can relate too

I can honestly say that the three cards that I have always wanted I waited to purchase until a "no doubt about it" example came up. It seems that you are torn between two cards and feeling like a fool so I would wait.

Besides, one will probably surface amongst this thread
collecting various PSA and SGC cards

yeah, thats what i was planning on doing. i have no problem with SGC cards at all, in fact i think they're just as good as PSA save for centering. but if i dropped 4 figures on a card, i would at least like to get recognition in the Registry. if it didnt cross, id be out of luck. if i really wanted a filler card for my set, i could submit one of the 4 i have, but i dont want a PSA 3 or 4 messing up my GPA

    goodrid,

Good luck on whatever you decide.

What do you think of the Sgc card? I like it but then again I may not be able to see clearly with
    blinders on...

i love it. i usually place more emphasis on centering, but for this set i care much more about fading/color. the SGC is the nicest graded 7 ive seen from any grading company. i might just say the hell with it and sell my Vette (i quit racing and working on cars) and just buy this set.

Hold out, Will. The SGC card is well off in both directions.

    Carew,

If rehab means I'd accept the Psa Plante over the Sgc one like many of the guys here then I'll
stay the way I am. Also, since I don't want to upset 1954 I'll leave it at that. Funny comment

    Goodrid,

    Don't sell the vette.

who is selling this card if you don't mind me asking?

    aconte
  • both the SGC and PSA cards are being sold by Mike Wentz. after a year of looking, a 10 minute conversation with him produced 2 Plantes.
  • and i couldnt care less about the Vette, i have 3 cars i use to race in SCCA events. it isnt a show car at all, just a (mostly) stock '72 with a Merlin 509 crate engine dropped in. of course, with that motor it can smoke a Ferrari 360 in the quarter mile like a cheap cigar
