Can anyone give details/feedback on what I just purchased?

I usually don't make impulse purchases, but I thought the detail on this coin was really nice (on the obverse). After getting outbid on the dead king's ancients and lordMV's ancients, I felt compelled to bid. What do y'all think? I probably paid too much, but oh well.

My main questions are:

1) What is it worth?
2) How big is it (compared to U.S. coins or in milimeters)?
3) What would you consider the grade?

It's a painfully nice looking coin-lots of different bidders... $35 to certify the coin after purchase and $15 shipping for the privilege.image

If I ever have it graded or authenticated it will be prior sale and in that case I would probably send it to ICG.
  • Nice clear portrait & legend on obverse! No cracks or clipping... I have no idea as to the value. $40 seems like a good price to me. I have seen a Gordian III denarius in similar condition w/a common reverse go for twice that (different seller), though they buyer probably paid too much.

The four denarii I have are all about the size of a modern U.S. dime, maybe half a millimeter wider.
They are getting in the thin end of the wedge by a sort of side wind.

    ttt for the evening crowd.
  • I too am not sure of the exact value-- then again, with ancients, any value you would see listed is
just a ballpark figure. But I would say $40 is definitely a good price for a Roman coin this nice-- it couldn't be more crystal clear on the obverse. Size wise, they are bigger than a US quarter.

That's a great looking coin, especially the obverse. Good purchase!

Size is probably going to be in the 18-20mm range. Should probably be about 2.8-3.4g. Great portrait! Apparently good metal. $40.00 for a Maximinus like that was a steal. I got $20.00 a few months back for one that was FAR inferior in look, detail and overall quality.

Nice buy. You're well on your way to getting "hooked" on another series. image
