Price Inversion

Was browsing through a major on line dealer/auction house.

Noticed 2 1872-S $5 gold.

1 - NGC VF25 $550

2 - NGC VF35 $505

Anyone else see something wrong with this? image

The higher priced coin may actually be the nicer of the two. As a local dealer in my area likes to say, "The price is the grade!"

One is probably noticably nicer (PQ) than the other. If so, it's probably worth the premium.

When you are talking about the VF grade in gold, eye appeal can mean a lot. Gold coins are soft and mark very easily. I could see an VF-25 with smooth evenly worn surfaces being more desirable than a VF-35 that could have more detail, but many, many marks.

This could also be a case where the graders blew it. The VF-25 might be nicer.

    Rob,

PM me if you are interested in either/both...I would be happy to give you my opinions on them.

  • Rella,

I actually have a nice PCGS XF40 in my set already. It just struck me as
interesting. I didn't look closely at the scans; it might be an issue of
    eye appeal vs. technical grade.
