ICG I am afraid is pretty poor on some of their grading.

IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE SERIES AND COIN TYPE. SOME THEY AREN'T TOO BAD, BUT IN MODERNS THEY SUCK.

  • IT USUALLY OVERGRADES ON MODERNS BUT SEEMS TO BE VERY CONSERVATIVE AT EVERYTHING ELSE.

  • VERY GOOD WHEN IT COMES TO SAMPLE SLABS. THEY MAKE ALOT.

They are not up with the best, but you can't reject all of their coins out of hand. A couple weeks ago I purchased a very attractive 1891-CC dollar in an ICG MS-63 holder. It put the NGC coin with the same grade on it that I saw to shame.

I can only speak for Indian Head and Flying Eagle Cents. My experience is that they are tough; on par with PCGS, NGC and ANACS. For other series I have no personal experience.
  • I've purchased some toned MS-66 Classic Commems in ICG holders - and I am happy with the grade. They fit in right along side the PCGS and NGC slabbed coins in the set.

I am also putting together a set of MS70 State Quarters (both clad and silver). Some of the coins are "just as good" as those in PCGS and NGC slabs in MHO.

I have a reverse toned 1878-S in a MS65 ICG holder that looks every bit as good as the MS65's that I have in NGC and PCGS holders.
Never-the-less, they blew it with over-grading moderns and they are still behind the 8-ball with market acceptance as a result.

Isn't their holder suppose to protect the coins better? That would make ICG better if you do not plan to sell your coins, right?

  • A guy recently took an MS67RD 1910-S Lincoln cent in an ICG holder crossed it to PCGS at the same grade and made about $30K. ICG had the grade right on the coin.

Only if you pay extra for the intercept shield slab.

  • Just like PCGS

Don't listen to modern collectors with little experience.

    ICG prices

Looks like about #5 per slab.

Yeah, it would be much smarter to listen to eBay sellers who hawk PCI, NTC and Trugrade garbage. Right, DCAMFranklin? image

ICG started out with the best of intentions and careful integrity. High hopes for them. Then for some reason, they put out a bunch of overgraded moderns, and sullied their reputation, perhaps beyond repair. Appparently they are better in some series, but lots of people don't trust them, and ICG coins have to be sold more "sight-seen" than some other services. As others have pointed out here, though, there are certainly cherry-picking possibilities for good prices in ICG slabs.
  • I have about a dozen common date MS-64 Morgans that I bought back when ICG first hit the scene. All look properly graded to me.
  • LOT'S of Members, Bear included, have found Barry Stuppler's opinion to be top-drawer. So, this auctions' description must say it all. Check it out:

  • I have seen a bunch of ICG Buffs and Jeffersons and they all seemed 1-2 points "high."

I too was disappointed with the way things turned out with ICG. The more credible grading services there are, the better it is for collectors and small dealers. Compeition keeps the big boys honest.

ICG not only made some grades mistakes, I've also seen them blow some easy attributions for die varieties as well. Once I say a piece that they said was a very rare Overton variety. The coin was really ugly, but even so had it been the variety it would have worth over $1,100. The trouble was ICG blew the Overton number and the coin was worth more like $15.
