Is NTC worth beans at grading early dates?

I'm contimplating purchasing what NTC calls an MS63, but leary as to what PCGS/ANACS might counter back with.

Craig

Edited to add: Has anyone else purchased NTC and crossed them through PCGS or ANACS, and if so, what were the results? I realize this is all based on a coin by coin basis, but in general, are they ok with early years or usually way off the mark?

  • I'd say an NTC slab isn't even worth a single bean...

NTC is even worse than PCI, and that takes effort.

  • Grade the coin as though it were raw. Just ignore the NTC slab. If it is a nice coin, go for it. They are infamous for overgrading and for not noting imperfections/cleanings/problems. However, you would be foolish to pass up a nice coin just because some silly person thought it would be good to send it to NTC. Just ignore the grade.

  • I've seen 1-5 points lower......
  • OK, I'm nowhere near novice, but that 1799 they graded as AU50 I'd call G4 at best.
The coin I was looking at buying I would have judged from the pics as AU58 at best (as raw). So goin with my insincts and what y'all are telling me, I've just saved myself a bit of heartache and indigestion.

    Many thanks!

i recently cherry-picked a small-size bust quarter. they called it ms-60, it was actually au-55, but i got it for basically xf $ (the dealer knew to discount the slab).

Thought I'd throw my two cents in ....

I have only bought one NTC holdered coin, at the Clearwater, FL show last year, it was a 1926-S Standing Liberty Quarter graded MS 64. The coin was clearly an AU 58 ( light rub on Liberty's right leg ), and a dealer realized the overgrade and charged me AU 50 money for it. I was more than pleased as the coin has a 95% FH. I've since cracked the coin out and it now resides in my Dansco raw book.

Here is another example of buying the coin, and NOT the holder.

The only way to buy NTC coins is to pay for the coin that is in the holder. The grade on the holder is worthless.

Unfortunately people don't get coins put in NTC holders for that purpose. They get them slabbed so that they can sell them at "bargain" prices to those who don't know any better.

Again, not to beat a dead horse. Look at the coin as if it were raw, but be careful, the NTC slab itself may be hiding something that you cant see initially, till you break it out. Counterfeits, the third side, damage, etc.

The last few NTC graded dollars I have seen have been way off AU-55 and 58's graded Ms-62-64

The problem is with internet sales, you cannot look at the coin. You then need to have a return privilege which then becomes a pain to deal with.

You can find good deals in their holders, but are more likely to find overgraded/problem stuff in them.
