1974-P ms66 Ike goes for $1,486 on eBay last night

Just wondering what you guys think of this price for a 1974-P ms66 Ike. I realize the higher grade/ lower pop Ike's are increasing in value but gee whiz. $1,486 just seems kind of steep. Do you think it's a case of a deep pocketed bidder or "real value" of that year and grade? Either way, I should have bought this time last year when I had the chance. image

I haven't seen the auction, but is someone betting on an upgrade (Assume the prior owner would have tried...)

Just think of what nice classic coins could be bought with that money.

Edit: Congrats on the sale trooper!
  • Thanks for the congrats!!!

I had a thread earlier about it, when the grades came back from PCGS.

It will be a long time until I top that again.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    WAY TO GO TROOPER!!image

That is one TOUGH Ike to make! Very few 73-P and 74-P PCGS MS66 Ikes have been made in
the past 2 years. A 73-P MS66 sold for over $1,500 on eBay right before yours....It was also
    recently made (a.w. coins, I think)image

With so few being made and new collectors coming into the Ike series, how long before these two
    tough Philly MS66's hit $2,000?image

This is a very tough coin. The mint set versions often come well struck but almost
always have dull, lifeless luster and a lot of marking. One can look through hundreds
of sets and not see anything that's very attractive. Now days many of the sets have
already been checked for the nicer specinens and this makes the search much more
difficult. There were a few rolls and bags of the '74 set aside but these coins are rarely
any better than the mint set coins.

One can buy what one chooses with his money but if you want something which hasn't
been bought and sold for decades and isn't well- known to large numbers of collectors
then a '74 Ike makes an excellent choice. Your money will go much farther in moderns
because there isn't competition with many thousands of other collectors.
