Masonic medals I'll probably never own...

A friend of mine kindly took some quick photos of 4 of his masonic medals and I decided to put them up. Nothing here less than RRR and the gilt piece from the Caroline Lodge may be unique. sigh... at least we get to see them! image

  • Very interesting pieces, Vern! image The design of first one reminds, for some strange reason, some Argentinian coins--some of them have very similair depiction of sun. ( I have had 5 centavos, if I'm not mistaken, with almost same depiction!)

BTW, why you are so pessimistic about these pieces? You never could know, here at the Darkside... image

  • Good point about being too pessimistic! Of course there are, I think, three known examples of the Caroline, 2 in my friend's hands and one in the Milan Museum. My friend is the 5th generation of his family to add to his collection. image

The others have less than 10 known each and you're looking at possibly the finest examples. On the other hand there are up to nine each I could find (If you're a "glass half full" kind of guy)... image

  • Just kidding, Vern! But from the other hand if your friend have two Caroline's medals.... well, if he is really your friend image

I think I've got an Iowa Masonic medal floating around here somewhere..... Don't think it's nearly as nice as these ones though. image

    Anyone know anything about these?

  • I think those are facinating and beautiful. I like the first one and the fourth one in particular.

    Thanks for the images!

I have a limited amount of information about the Napoleonic era pieces and if there's an engraver's name or initials I might be able to find something prior to 1905 in Forrer. But I'm pretty sure there's specialized literature for the so-called masonic "pennies" that I think evolved from pieces like the ones above. Maybe someone here specifically collects the pennies... image

Well, this one is hardly Napoleonic and it just misses your cutoff date by 1 year. It's a 1906.

Well, in case you have a sudden enlightening, here's a pic: image

  • Cool medals, all three of them! I wonder if the ribbon on the 1906 is original? If so it's done *very* well... hope I look that good when I'm 98! image

Any idea of the age on your second one Boz? You see that pattern quite a bit but I've always wondered when the Lodges decided to create them. In any case image on the variety of what are, essentially, private medals... image

It was in a mixed lot of tokens and medals all dating to the 60's to 70's ... I would expect it to fall into that era,,, I have some others that I will have to look for,,, More private medals from a Cleveland area chapter.
