Thinking About Collecting Quarter Eagles?

Good morning forum members. I need a little help from “The Experts” out there and there are many on the forum…….I have an interest in collecting Indian Head $2 ½ Gold.I have always liked the series and am contemplating starting to collect MS quality pieces.

My question(s) to the forum is this:

1.)What are the best reading materials out there to further educate myself on Quarter Eagles,as far as grading, what to look for, pitfalls to stay away from counterfeits, etc.

2.)Best places and most reputable people to deal with and purchase from.

I like to know more about something that I may peruse as possibly collecting and do not like to jump into something without some degree of confidence as to what I am doing.

Thanks in advance.

Bill.

So far as references go, perhaps you could try to get A Handbook of 20th-Century United States Gold coins 1907 - 1933 by David Akers. It was published by Bowers & Merena back in 1988 so you may have to go to a unsed numismatic book dealer to find it.

So far as the set goes, here is the raw set in my collection. It's not for sale but if you wanted me to build a set for you, send me a PM. We can discuss grades and other details.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I would also recommend Doug Winter's book on the series:
A Collector's Guide To Indian Head Quarter Eagles by Winters and Fuljenz, 2001.
It is available on his website (link).

Quarters Eagles offer some of the best values in numismatics. 2 1/2 Indians are great, you can find many choice AU coins for 150 to $200. The one key coin, the 1911-D isn't too much of a stopper. That's a fun set to put together. I highly recommend it. I have a set that is very similiar to BillJones's above. I put it together in the late 80's.....resides in a capital plastics holder also. In fact, Sunnywood, a board member had the finest set of 2 1/2 Indians ever. Check it out, it is in the registry.

Don't forget the Liberty's either. Grab your Redbook and check out the low mintages!
