obverse has a couple chopmark like holes where they should not be reverse should have some sign of 50 CENTS under the eagle wear on reverse is very odd, unless coin is bent
Yes it is a counterfeit. As Nysoto mentioned the eagles left wing where it joins the body is much to narrow, and on the obverse the layout of the stars are wrong. On the genuine 1837's the stars were smaller and more spread out. the lowest one on the right hand side should be down at the 5:00 position between the date and the hair curl.
I checked and this one is not in the Davignon book on counterfeit bust halves. I've added it to my watch list. Should be interesting to see what it goes for.
I don't buy the its a quarter crap - this seller has coins before and should be able to see what it was by its size - I asked the seller a question and got the following response:
The diameter is approximately 1 1/4 inches

A quarter would be 24.3 mm in daimeter (just under an inch) A half dollar would be 30 mm in diameter (about 1 1/4 inch)
I am definately by no means an expert here but I find it oddly curious that the only thing on this coin that is conveniently legible is the date yet the rest of it as you put it has been beaten with an ugly stick and the coin is humorously located in Bankrupt City OH LOL the blonde observer snapmohr
hey sinin1, i actually don't think it's flattened. i think the seller gave you an erroneous diameter. he probably looked it up in the redbook or something. i honestly think the seller's just loopy.
I haven't heard anyone call a "bust" coin a turban head since the 1960's or early 1970's. Wonder what reference book the seller is still using. I also like the BANKRUPT CITY location.
If this had been a RE half, the obv design was not appropriate and would be an obvious fake. Either that or you'd have a one off pattern worth at least a bundle of "ugly sticks."

Couldn't have said it better myself .
Odd? Not really, no.
Ugly? Yep!
obverse has a couple chopmark like holes where they should not be
reverse should have some sign of 50 CENTS under the eagle
wear on reverse is very odd, unless coin is bent
obverse has been cleaned/scratched
probably not even silver

so what denomination is it?
now, it may be a flattened quarter (texas coin), but it definitely started life out as a quarter.
