Blanchard will not stop!!!
Calling me to buy a 1854 Type 2 Gold $1 MS63 for $17,300. This after telling them I wouldnt pay anywhere near that for a coin.
Heritage recently realized $11,500, CoinValues has it at $10,000.
Are they trying to make $7000 on this coin? Or did they just buy it slightly lower than $17,300?

First I have been very disappointed with the quality of the better gold coins that I have seen in AU and low end MS holders for both PCGS and NGC pieces. I’ve yet to see a REAL Mint State Type 2 Gold Dollar or Three Dollar Gold Piece in an MS-60, 61 or 62 holder. I’ve also been very disappointed with the MS-63 Three Dollar Gold Pieces that I have seen a shows. Last spring I had “the real thing” on consignment, and I’m still kicking myself for not buying it. Maybe Blanchard is offering you “the real thing” and maybe not; but that could account for the price
Second, the Type Dollar Gold Pieces are notorious for weak strikes and mint caused problems. This is the primary reason why the design was only issued for parts of the three years. The head of Ms. Liberty was too high, which resulted in a loss of detail on Ms. Liberty’s head and on the date opposite her head on the reverse. Some of these coins have dates that are barely readable although the coin itself is EF, AU or even Mint State.
Third, I’ve seen a fair number of 1854 Type Two Gold Dollars that were struck from worn and rusted dies. This did not improve their appearance.
Blanchard could be just overcharging you, but I could see the possibility where a real “PQ” piece could be worth a strong premium.

<< <i>Blanchard is not a numismatic company. It's a sales company. They put a set percentage on top of whatever their alleged costs are like a car dealer.

I undertstand they charge a % above cost, thats OK. But what percentage? Seems like 30-50% and THATS assuming they get the coins at prices we can get them at. I must believe they get them cheaper.

I believe it goes by the pop, believe it or not.
Pretty murky.
