New Merc

A new Merc for my shortset, got this one from DeepCoin, thank you very much! It's a 1939 in a Green Label PCGS holder, graded MS67... though it looks like there is a scratch on the right side of the face under the ear and then going up into the hair, almost directly dead center of the coin, running vertically. Really jagged though... so I wonder, could it be a die crack? Even though it's in the devices and doesn't even go to the rim? It doesn't show in the picture and my scanner isn't up to an up-close shot... any opinions? YOu would think a scratch would keep it from getting a 67... maybe I'm wrong... Enjoy.

It sounds like a die crack, but I can't see it in the picture.

A die crack will be raised. A scratch would be indented. Look at it at angles and you should be able to tell if it is raised.

I think it's raised, but I have never seen a die cracked coin in hand before, so I don't know exactly what to look for. I always seem to be able to identify something after I've actually seen one in hand and been able to study it... it looks raised to me... but again, I'm not sure...

Are you sure it's not the holder??? Can't tell from the scan

It's not on the holder, I still see it from different angles... I just don't know how to recognize if it's raised or recessed... crack or scratch...

An MS67 would be a really tuff grade to get from PCGS with a deep scratch or any such mark......so my guess is die crack (with out seeing the coin)

Its a beautiful coin George. 1939 Mercs can come in great quality.
