This has been a frustrating set to build. I'm poor, so I've been trying to build it in the MS62 to MS64 range. Believe it or not, it's tough to find some of these coins in that grade range. Anybody have a nice 1866 in that range? image

Edited to add grades.

There is nothing wrong with collecting them in that grade range. It appears that your coins are very aesthetically pleasing and PQ for the grade. Collecting with a purpose is always alot more fun and this is what you have done. This is a gorgeous series to collect. I always think "Civil War" when I look at them. Keep it up.

I really like that series and your coins, Russ. Another upside is that we have you 40 percent of the way toward collecting nickels! image

The 1869 looks like the reverse surface was altered a little. image

My favorite of the group is the 1869. Besides the fact that I really like the way it looks, it worked VERY hard to get in to that holder. Bought it as an NGC MS64RB.

Sent in as a crossover with a minimum grade of 63RB - DNC.

Cracked it out and resubmitted it - Bodybag, altered surfaces.

Turned around and submitted it again - MS65BN, POP 1/0! image

Those are pretty decent looking, Russ. Would you post the grades under the pictures so we can tell what's what?

I like the last example the best. Its the most gorgeous. There is just something very appealing about the color.

Nice looking bunch. I like the 64 best despite the lower grade. I like that look.

That 64 would be my favorite of the group (based on those pictues at least). Looks really PQ for a MS62.

The 68 and 71 look really nice too.

    Hooked,

You have a good eye, (which, of course, means I agree with you image ). I think both it and the 1871 are upgrade candidates. After the set is completed some time off in the distant future, I'll give PCGS another shot at them.

  • Nice set. I've been trying to find them in AU58 just for the challenge
of it, and it has been really hard to find good examples. I'm sure that
you get lots of competition for the 62-64 range with others looking for
    more affordable examples.

  • Very nice set, Russ. I really like the 1864 and the 1867.image
  • Great looking set. This is the first (and so far only) set that I completed. Most of them (except for the 1864 small date and 1872) I got when I was a kid in the F-XF range. It was only 2-3 years ago that I got those final two coins in VF. Although I could now afford to put together an uncirculated set, I just haven't been tempted. It's great to be able to look at my existing set and reflect on how much time and effort went into completing it.

I've been looking for some other major varieties to add (like the 1867 double date), but those can be really hard to find in a nice VF-ish grade.

  • Russ,
Very nice, thanks for sharing. My favorite is the '69, especially cool given the grading history to get it where it is. Two-centers are among my favorite copper coins, a really neat series I'd like to collect someday.

  • When I made fun of two cent pieces recently as looking like 2 reverses stuck together I wasn't kidding, but that doesn't mean nice looking and afordable pieces can't be found.

I wish when I sold the coins that I had to sell last spring I had saved the 1867 2 center that I had purchased out of a complete 2 cent collection raw and came back from pcgs as 65 r & b with 90 % over all red and full thick satin type luster on both sides. Not for me as much as I liked it but I would have sold it to Russ at cost. His enthusiasm for the hobby is refreshing and is what real coin collecting is all about.

Hey thanks for posting the grades Russ. I don't know much about 2¢ers and it's nice to see side by side comparisions.
The 62 grades kinda baffle me though. Why are they graded so low? The 1865 is obviously weakly struck but does it hurt the grade that much? The 1864 is kinda weak struck & I see some ticks top & bottom on the obv but it doesn't look that bad. The 1871 MS63 R&B looks the best to me.

<< <i>The 1865 is obviously weakly struck but does it hurt the grade that much? >>

Yep, that's why it graded 62. It's VERY weakly struck. If it were a later year, it may not have been penalized as much, but the 1865's generally come well-struck. As for the 1864, I think it's just flat undergraded by a point, as I also think the 1871 is.
