The Joy and Frustration of pricing Carver Commems--and a Question

The good news is a lot of dealers don't like them, don't think anyone else likes them, and will sell them cheaply.

The bad news is a lot of dealers don't like them, have no idea what fair prices are for them, and will stick a totally unrealistic price on one, and not believe you when you try to explain this to them.

Do the rest of you find much consistency in the prices of the series you are interested in?

Merc Dime prices are real stable through the whole industry. Hardly ever will you find different prices that are more than a thousand dollars apart for the same date and grade......image. Five hundred....alot of times though.....image

One of the series that most dealers, in general know nothing about. Following this market is "additional duty" to some, easier to dismiss them as a whole. Education is the key. Some series, the collector knows much more, and has to educate the seller. If the seller doesn't want to learn, that is too bad. ego vs. knowledge...
  • On a semi-related note, I just got a very nice 53-P Carver today from David Lawrence, and I really think they priced it under the money.

The hitch--it's NGC65. For the first time, I understand the frustration some of you I'm sure have experienced about finding a great coin that you can't add to your reg set. Unless you go through the resubmission or crossover hoopla.

Well, it's still a great coin, and I'd buy again in the blink of an eye. Would I think PCGS would grade it 65? Yes, as sure as you can ever be about those things (shugs shoulders).

Few dealers have an idea of what to charge for clads so usually want me to offer. I'll
make an offer of about 60-80% of what I think it's worth and rarely will raise it if they
twist my arm. Any arm twisting will result in lower offers for other stuff and I still won't
raise the offer. They're frequently surprised by the offer anyway so it's not a problem.
