Randy (StarRjM19) is a '71 collector, and seems willing to pay a lot for the cards he needs. i've never heard of the high bidder. i doubt it'll go much higher than opening bid, as i just can't fathom the idea of spending four figures for a checklist, regardless of rarity
A very tough card but Im not sure anyone else is willing to go past that opening bid. This is the second 8 offered on ebay the last one sold for $550 in 2002(by AJ's as well).
Can anyone fill me in on why this card is so tough. I have never seen a series 1 sheet but with series 1 being 132 cards (full sheet) and there are no known Double Prints like 72-73 it should of been full printed . Why is it tougher than other checklists from that era ?
taken from Beckett's 50th issue- "Back in the good old days, collectors actually marked off he they owned on checklists to keep track of what they needed. Vintage checklists, then are incredibly difficult to find in unmarked condition. For some reason, this card has proven to be the most difficult of all, rarely sitting in showcases for long."
since that tells you little, here's my guess- first series OPC cards from '71 are a lot harder to find in high grade than the 2nd series. whether it was due to a vending find or something else, you see a lot fewer PSA 8/9's from the first series.
another tough checklist is the 1969 OPC CHecklist #132. there's a 7 currently on ebay at $187 or so. this one could prove just as tough as the '71 #111 in the future.
I can definately tell you that the second series is easier than the first but that is no different than 1970-71 OPC or 69-70 OPC. Ive been working on 71-72 OPC for 15 years and i can tell you the card is tougher than 70-71 1st series checklist
The myth of this card has been around for as long as ive worked on the set. I was hoping someone had some info on why it is tougher than the other years around it
Looks like im way off on how high this card will go Chris is now the high bidder at $966 . When i originally started working on this set in graded form i had budgeted 700 for this card . Looks like im either low on my budget or i need to be patient.
