Found an auction with several coins in a "group" picture - one side only (mixed obverse/reverse view) - and sent the Seller a question. How do the forum members who sell on EBay a lot feel about his response, especially his failure to at least offer me a better pic of the coin I expressed an interest in?
Question to Seller:
<< <i>Your auctions would get much more attention from serious collectors of Japanese coins if you posted pictures clearly showing both sides, both to allow dating and to give at least a guess as to grade. For example, I have 18 holes in my date set for Y#23 10 sen coins, and a couple of upgrades needed, but I can't even guess at the year or grade of the 10 sen you pictured. >>
Response:
<< <i>Thanks for your interest,Coins are sold ungraded at very low prices and for the most part grouped to make sales easier for us as we are selling of the contents of a very large estate, more photos and better attention to listing features would also mean more time, thus selling would be done with reserves prices etc. and not the no reserve low starting prices we have maintained. I am not concerned about getting more attention from serious collectors only getting the opening price as our listings are for the most part only a few dollars and as it states there are some very good bargains. Thanks for your interest. >>
BTW, in VF or better, there are some years in that series that I would have been willing to bid significantly more than his opener just to get that one coin.

Thing is, there are some things I might like even in those s@#% grades.. but everything starts at $10 regardless of what it is?? (most aren't worth half that)

He was silly not to oblige you and I've seen sellers not go back to their auction pages to correct poor spelling and bad images-they need lessons in how to present product and properly answer queries from prospective buyers.
is that you end up being governed by inferiors. – Plato

I hate sellers that start with outrageous prices. I would think that guy would at least bump his prices down to $9.99, considering that one cent difference in the starting price costs him an additional $0.10-$0.15 per auction.
There are several sellers who use this technique. In almost every case the scan is poor. I have found you usually get what you pay for - or less when buying coins sold in this manner.
