  • Hello everyone,

I'm new here... I got to start posting two days ago (signed up two weeks ago, but it took that long to be approved)

I'm just your average guy, with six kids... All under the age of 13... My nine year old daughter has decided that she likes coin collecting too...

I have been collecting one thing or another, off an on now for 20 years, but nothing close to nice until last year.

You can read more on my collections web site where I have an about page which includes what I'm collecting and hope to collect.

I want to thank everyone who has already taken the time to introduce themselves to me via my other postings.

    Matt
  • OK. Here's how I got into coins - When I was 28 my father died very suddenly. After he died I was going through his things and found a coin collection. I had no idea that he had this collection, which mostly consisted of lower grade stuff - a few large cents, a two cent, a few morgans, etc.

So of course I thought , "I'm rich!". How could a 1878 silver dollar be worth anything less than big bucks! image Anyhow, I set out to find out how many millions I was worth. In the process, I found out I wasn't. I also picked up the "bug" and now can't stop collecting.

I got away from it for a little while because I bought a condo and had a baby, but now have decided to squander my money on coins again.

The dime in my earlier thread is my latest. Looks like I'm getting sucked into the vortex...

  • New also. I've been reading this forum for 3-4 months now and finally decided to join. You guys (and girls) have increased my knowledge of coin collecting 1000% and saved me from making numerous costly mistakes.
If you always tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.
  • Another new member signing in...

Although I did somewhat introduce myself in my first post here.

I am 31 and live in Nashville, TN. Any other collectors here in the Middle TN area? I am a grad student in medical computing at Vanderbilt University and a physician, recently finishing a residency in Internal Medicine there as well.

I am new (again) to collecting. I say again because I did a little collecting when I was in jr high but didn't know what I was doing and didn't have any rhyme or reason to my collecting. Probably like many others, I first got interested in this hobby when I inherited some coins from my grandmother.

This time around I am trying to learn what I am doing and enjoy both the learning and the coin-acquiring. I am going to collect a unc 20th century type set (mostly gem). I figure it will take me about 2 years to do this at my current budget. In the meantime, there is alot to look at and read about.

So far I am really impressed with the members here, specifically their willingness to answer lots of questions and to share their knowledge. I look forward to being a part of the forum!

  • I've been collecting for about a year now and have established a collection of about 200 coins. I have a little bit of everything. I preffer Large cents, 2 cent pieces, Morgans and Silver Eagles but if it looks good, and i have the money, i buy it. Currrently, i'm working on an AU Morgan date set and i've just completed my Silver eagle set along with my lincoln set (excluding the V.D.B.-s). What i enjoy most is the knowledge the i obtain because of this hobby and also all the people i meet. Thanx for the welcome, and welcome to all other newbies
  • Welcome all Newbies!!! image
  • Hi all, started collecting 2 yrs. ago with mint stuff after my 2 grandsons were born. then one day I went to an auction that had 4 PCGS CC morgans and no one was bidding image I like the coins and not knowing anything about PCGS I ended up the proud owner of 4 coins, that I bought for 50% below the going price. I said to myself..."self this is like taking candy from a baby". It turns out most of my buys aren't that sweet. Now I'm buying stuff I like and hopefully the value will increase, I'm still telling the wife we're investing and her reply is "sure we are".

I live in Portsmouth, Virginia and the wife and I own a Real Estate settlement company, been doing it for 14 years now, we work hard, if you call pushing a pencil hard work, and the benifits have been very rewarding. Anyone needing any R/E work done in the Tidewater area give a shout.

I enjoy all the posts and I learn something new amost everyday.

    Herb

  • Hello all!! I made my first post this week on the BST board. I'm just finishing an Indian Head Cent set in VF30 to AU58 ... only the 1873 left. Looking for another series ... I dabble a little in Morgans and Type coins. I also collect gas pumps, gas globes, and motor oil cans. As you can tell from my join date I've been lurking for 2 years ... I've always prided myself on being a good listener. Thanks for the welcome!!!

  • Hello Everyone,

    I am also a "newbie"...

I happened upon the currency forum when I was doing research on a Silver Certificate I found for sale in Turkey. I found everyone to be extremely helpful and friendly, so I decided to check out the coin forum and have been very impressed by the diversity and the quality of the information here.

I've been collecting coins for about 12 years, but only recently have the disposable income to start buying some really nice coins. It is a very exciting time as I can finally own the eye-appealing coins I only dreamed about as a youngster.

I will continue to review the posts and plug something here and there. This is an amazing forum and I am glad I found it.

  • Hi

My name is Rob, I've been reading the boards for 8 months or so, this has got to be the best place for learning all you need to know about coins, thanks to all the experts who post here. It's amazing how generous all of you are with the knowledge you share amongst each other, I hope to keep learning, and if I feel I can contribute, I will.

Right now my focus is on MS Lincoln cents, and I'm really having a good time finding coins that I like, although I don't find many that I like too often. Due to the crazy prices some of them are bringing now, it kind of limits me to the lower mint state grades on quite a few of them. When I first started seriously collecting the Lincolns, I didn't see it as a huge problem in getting them all in full red condition, alas, I have since come to view that a *little* differently! Now, I've had to lower my standards a bit and look for really nice red-brown coins, as they fit my budget and if you find the right ones, can be just as eye appealing as a full red one, imho.

    Rob

  • Welcome to all the newbies. Although I have a high post count, mostly from messing around on the open forum, I am still very new myself. I learn everytime I log on to this thread. They have save me alot of money in my mind.

I plan as I meet each one to thank them in person. Maybe buy lunch at the next Balt show for those who show.

    Welcome aboard,

and you might find that the "ship" analogy isn't far from the truth.

    davewang,
I'm kinda' a VAMer myself and LOOKED forward to maybe passing on some info, but you seem to be pretty sharp in that arena, judging by the couple VAM comments I've seen by you. You might have to start fielding the VAM questions. image

And, somebody tell me, "what is a cheat thread?"

  • Hello, I have less than 100 - been a member for less than a year and joined just to gain more knowledge and insight from those that are dedicated to the collection field. Have been collecting since I was 12 (first coin to collect was a V nickle, and Peace Dollar) had both till a little while ago. Sent both into PCGS for the free grading (returned body bagged - cleaned ???). I am retired from the Marine Corps and now working harder at collecting with the desire to complete PCGS sets for all years 1954 - present. Why 1954 (l do not know - just picked a date). Love reading all threads and responding to those that pull at my hands. Thanks for the ability to express and hope all have a great 2004.

    Hello to all,

I am about a 3 day old newbee...

I appreciate all the help thats been given to me while trying to get pics posted.I still haven't perfected it yet but I am improving.I'm crazy about coins....I started collecting when I was a teen but never aquired more than probably 100 coins, nothing even worth bragging about.I am always changing my interest in hobbies and activities and while cleaning out the closet a few months ago I came across my old coins, and of course my interest was sparked again.I dug right in and have been buying everything thats either undervalued or just plain has eye appeal..So far I have completed the following sets:Indian Head,Lincoln,Liberty,Jefferson,Roosevelt,Washington,Franklin,Kennedy, all are raw high grade coins.Almost complete with Barber dimes,Barber Halfs,Walking Halfs,Trade dollars.I am about half way through Peace and Morgan all MS+ certified. Then a little bit of everything else.My main focus and interest is in the Bust Half dollars.I just cant stop....I want them all..yeaaaah...

I live in Clearwater,Fl. right across the bay from Tampa..

I didn't realize how big the coin industry was until I got involved in it..It is awesome... image

I've met a lot of great people at coin shows and the web...look forward to the future.
As long as I don't get bored or complete all the possible sets anytime soon I'm here for awhile..

Hello! I started collecting when I got a Whitman Lincoln Cent folder in Cub Scouts back in 1972 or 1973. My dad also gave me a 1899 Barber Half in fine condition around then. I have stopped and started actively collecting several times over the years due to changing interests and budget but I have been buying mint and proof sets every year since 1976. I also buy the modern commemoratives that I like (No Eunice Shriver!) and I have a complete set of Silver Eagles and 1/10 ounce Gold Eagles.

  • Well I am very new to coin collecting. I started collecting very recently, but my interest can be attributed to my late Uncle Jack. He collected coins and always brought them out to show when we would visit. I always thought they were fascinating. Anyway, after many years of mild interest, I visited a local coin shop and now I'm hooked.

I am still exploring what type of coin I really want to collect. At this point I guess I have to say I like them all! Unfortunately, my budget is far more limited than my interest.

This forum has been a wonderful resource and I have picked up a lot of valuable information. As a novice, I have a lot to learn, so read the posts, but rarely comment.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your expertise and time.

  • OK, I guess it's my turn, I'm Ray from the northern burbs of Chicago. I have collected and sold sports cards for many years, but just got heavily into collecting coins in the past year. My primary focus currently is Peace Dollars, half dimes, Large Cents, and 2 & 3 cent pieces, I prefer PCGS certified but nice original (uncleaned) Raw coins are fine as well. This is a super site and i've learned a great deal regarding coins already.
