Collecting Mexican Un Peso Silver Coins

Hello all,
I was thinking of starting a collection of the Mexican Un Peso's from the early 1900's.
I had read on one of the coin auction sites, that Foreign coins tend to be overlooked here in the US and that there are many bargains to be had, Both for long term and short term collecting or investing.
I really like the Eagle on the coins, as well as the cap and rays.
I was also thinking that they would go nicely with my Maple Leafs and Libertads.
Really, I just wanted a second opinion, or third, or fourth.
Thanks for all the help.image

Welcome to the dark side. You will see that there are MANY bargains to be found on the darkside (try to keep it a secret though). I'm not sure how world coins pan out with investing, but from a collector stand point, it is great.

I'm not familiar with the early Mexican un (1) pesos, but if you want to see some gorgeous eagles, you might want to look into some early 20th century German coins as well.

    edit:

Here is one of my favorite eagles:

    Greetings from the DARKSIDE!

Mexican coins offer the collector a wide variety of choices at extremely reasonable prices. I happen to specialize in Polish coins, but I can't help myself when it comes to an occasional choice Mexican piece. Here a couple for your consideration:

A 5 peso .900 silver (two-year type coin), substantially larger than a US silver dollar (paid $12 for it):

A 2 1/2 peso .900 gold (bullion restrike - they used the 1945 dies to make the restrikes during the 50's), cost - $30:

    Hi, and welcome!

Mexican 1 pesos from the 1900s are some of my favorite coins as well. I have picked up quite a few of the cap and ray type in bullion silver lots for melt price, so that's not too expensive. The "caballito" variety made from 1910-1914 is IMHO one of the most beautiful world coins of all, but it's a bit pricier, especially in uncirculated.

Welcome to our Forum, Comp124!!image I want to second Newsman's recommendation of a "caballito" -- every collection should have one. I should point out that Mexico's older silver coinage was a sleeper until about 3-4 years ago and it has been getting progressively hotter each year, especially for nice quality higher-grade examples. That said, it's not like when an area of the US coin market gets "hot," so the bargains remain "out there."

You don't have to go far back to get to the beginning of the un peso series. They started in 1866 with the French invasion and came back in the 1890's. Here's my set so far.
