Large images here:

Click for large obverse image.

Click for large reverse image.

The images are very accurate as to color, and show all the marks. Nothing hidden away.

Result just posted at PCGS. What do you think they slapped on the label?

There are a couple forum members that already know the grade. SSSSHHHH!!!!!

Thinking BB on this one. What do I know though. I stink at picking out original looking copper coins.

Having seen some that were slabbed lately, I'd say MS62BN.

I see it as a proof also, but the dings on the reverse hold it to PR62.

I'm guessing it was once R, but turned a little darker in the slab.

    We ARE watching you.

Russ: the coin looks clearly to be a Red & Brown late die state coin (die cracks) that may have a bit of PVC damage and/or corrosion on the reverse at 6:00-7:00 and 2:00... and also a few contact marks which may have held it back...

So, while the coin has the eye appeal of an MS-63/64 I will guess that it was either net graded down to an AU-58 or perhaps body-bagged for the PVC/corrosion...

Therefore either AU-58 RB or bodybagged... image

First glance, MS62 rb. Second review, AU58 due to a couple of nicks and what I see as some rub on the WE.

Okay, everybody ready? Here is comes:

    They graded it MS65BN!

No way in hell that coin is gem, and no way in hell it's brown! It is a pop 1/0, though. image

It started as an NGC MS64RB. Submission history:

    #1 - DNC (Min 63RB)
    #2 - Bodybag, altered surfaces
    #3 - MS65BN

    World-class graders, my ass!

Btw I thought the coin looked like a 64rb but tried to guess the oddball thing pcgs did to cause you to post.

MS 63RB . I would discount the nicks an the reverse on this old a coin,
and attribute a weak strike for the WE on the obverse

If that is a MS65, than I have a MS63 that is in serious need of an upgrade.

PCGS really dropped the ball on this one.

Now send it back in to cross it to a RB designation! (Would that be worth while?)

    Doug,

Nah, it wouldn't be worthwhile, but it would be fun. image MS65RB's are common, this is a pop 1/0!! POP TOP! Hey, that's what it's all about!

The thing that really pisses me off is that it took three submissions to get it graded. It didn't cross at MS63, (a point lower than NGC graded it), then it gets bodybagged, and now it's an MS65? This is utter BS.

It might be brown now. Depending how long it sat at pcgs.

So what's it like to not have possession of this coin for a YEAR while trying to cross it (assuming Economy service) three times? image

can you post a digi-pic of the whole slab???

    Doug,

I have pictures to look at. image Actually, the first two times were regular, so it wasn't that long. This time, though, I put it on an economy submission with a bunch of other coins, so it was 82 days.

I think you should offer to lend this coin to pcgs for the world series grading final round, (but only if they promise to put yet another grade on it before they send it back to you.)

    Karl,

The coin isn't back yet - grades just posted yesterday. The submission is on hold right now because I told them to send one of the other coins back to the grading room to try and get it right.

Looks RB to me, but maybe it didn't cross because PCGS didn't think it was RB?

If the min was 63RB, and they thought it was 65BN would they cross it or would they think that 65BN was "less than" 63RB?

    Just thinking out loud.

That's possible. But then that doesn't explain the bodybag the second time.

Maybe the coin's condition improved in the three months it was at PCGS.

So this is what happens with top pops and Registry coins huh? From bodybag to ms65. Keep playing the Registry folks it's all about the numbers. Oh, and the money.image Some may not like what I've said but if this isn't proof of what a game all this is, and it might just make 1 person think about the next so called top pop they spend a ton of money on.

No 65 money from this guy !

I still say BB because of the reverse color and if not BB it sure does not look mint state from the pictures. By the way tomorrow I am going to the local coin shop and get a couple of these that he has graded correctly at AU and then they will Fly Off to PCGS quicker than the speed of light. Man I could use some cheap Gift Dollars.

Russ....damn you are truthful about the grade given and what your opinion was and that is cool. image

Seems like the original NGC grade was pretty accurate.image
