Fudging in the grading World Series

We have had a few dealers try to enter in the Collector division. When we find out we boot them into the Dealer division.

Here's the rule...if you are listed as a PCGS dealer, you're a dealer. If you buy and sell coins as your primary focus and act as a dealer, you're a dealer. If you work for a dealer, you're a dealer.

If there is anyone listed as a winner, runner-up, or "wild card" contender in the Collector division as listed on the PCGS website, please let me know and I'll check it out.

Thanks for the help.

    We ARE watching you.

  • I really didn't try to enter as a collector. They never asked and I forgot about the two divisions.

  • One division could have worked if you would have given dealers a handicap.

I just got my results 5 minutes ago (in the 70's) and based on the number of registry sets I currently have listed (around 10), if anyone should be classified as a "collector", I deserve it as much as the next guy. Yeah - I know - nice try. image

I lost a great number of points on a few coins (like calling a F-12 Morgan a VF-20 or missing or adding a PL on Morgans where it didn't belong), but, all in all, it was a lot of fun. I only wish there was a single MS Wash quarter, Lincoln cent (wheat or Memorial), state quarter, Roosie dime, Franklin Half, Kennedy half, Ike, SBA, Sac or any other Mint State moderns I deal with all the time (OK - a couple proof Silver Eagles did get in there). It would be great fun in the future to have a "classics" and "moderns" grading tier. But, again, PCGS did a great job with the competition and if I get a chance in Baltimore or Long Beach in June, I will give it another shot! image

P.S. I am quite happy in the dealer section and if there is a slight modification of the coin series being represented in the future competitions, I think I can compete with those Hall of Fame graders. Bulk graders deserve a shot too you know! image

To me, it did not seem represenative of the U.S. coin market. Not a single copper coin. No bust coins, either draped or capped, not a single seated liberty coin of any kind. Was this a Morgan dollar grading contest?

I believe the mixture of coins represents what PCGS is seeing in the Grading Room right now... and in approximately that ratio.

In other words, lots of Morgan and $20 Saints.
    When in doubt, don't.
