I have hard time finding Proof Walkers that I really like. I've handled a few in the business, but I've yet to hang on to one for my colleciton. Usually it's a matter of too much dipping that turns me off.
I've got a nice war nickel, Mercury and buffalo, but the Walker as evaded me so far.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I had the 1939 to 1942 walkers in my display at the FUN show. Sorry, I dont have the other 3 to have a complete set. I like that 1941 with the gold rim toning. My '42 looks almost like a gold walker due to the toning.
I must agree with Bill about overdipped proof silvers... at Clearwater, he discussed this, and had 2 Proof Mercs... one a GORGEOUS Off-White original coin, the other one was dipped Blast White... the Off-White looked so much better, and Bill expressed that he preferred the Off-White... Just looks more original, the Blast White's look unnatural...
<< <i>Is it just my imagination, or do many Proof Liberty Walking halves have a granular or "matte" finish? >>
It must be your imagination They were intended to have brilliant mirror like fields. Many have small striations. This proof Walker has many small one by the rims.

Man that is a really nice coin. I don't collect the series but sure can see why folks do.

Though the obverse is beautiful on the SAE...you need a beautiful reverse as well...Walkers win out big time.
Here is my contribution - 1938 PCGS PR66
Note the missing AW initials on the reverse!
