MORGAN - 1880-S 67 shot at 68?

Do I have a shot at 68 with PCGS or NGC? It is currently in an NGC 67 holder.

You can't really say whether a coin like that will up grade from a picture. But since 1880-S is a very common date that comes nice, I'd say that this coin would have to sing, dance image do handstands and proably do so things that can't be mentioned here image. Neither of the leading grading services hand out MS-68 like candy on 19th century coins, not even S-mint dollars from the early 1880s.

From what I've seen of NGC67 coins last week, you're 10 times more likely to get MS66 from PCGS than you are MS68.

    It's the same coin regardless.
  • NGC has been tough recently on giving out 68's. I have made a 68 at PCGS recently. The coin must be ALL there to get a 68.

Hard to be sure, but from your small pics it looks like it would have a shot. I don't even see any marks from those pics....

ACG would easily give it a 69DMPL if you're interested

It's next to impossible to tell from that small picture other than it's a very nice Morg but a 68 needs to be very clean mark wise and I see what looks like some slight chatter under the E DO in ONE DOLLAR on the rev, a smalll obv tick under U in PLURIBUS, something happening between the cap & star R-6 and a small hit on the upper chin & something on the jawline. Looks like some slight weakness in the upper hair but could be from the scan and I can't see the hair over the ear, you know the < that makes the 3 strands of hair. Looks like a nice 67 for sure maybe close to 68 from the pict. I'd say shot but I'm not going to say lock because it would be a low 68.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

nice coin and from the photo, not to mention the difference between 67 and 68, it is possible but not likely. I would leave it as is... I think someone else said it is the same coin regardless.

I would give it a try to upgrade to NGCMS68. Just don't crack it out of the holder to do so.

Going solely from that small pic I would say very little chance IMO.
  • If the picture accurately represents the coin, probably not - coin looks somewhat washed out & lifeless, - but if that's just the scan & not the coin - maybe. It's impossible to grade coins based on digitel images (unless you're trying to determine the difference between VG & F)

Try posting a larger image, maybe that'll help.

This 1879-S silver dollar I acquired about 6 months ago or so is as nice a MS-67 as you can expect. There is no mark on that cheek or in the fields.

But in my opinion, it is not a 68. That does not mean NGC or PCGS would not grade it 68 on any given day today.

But I do not like my coins maxed out in their holders to the point that they are "crippled" in that new holder!

This coin stays in the current holder! A regency holder to boot.

moster 67 oreville, it has a better chance to 68 than the one in the thread imo. very clean cheek and with nice contrast. This coin would not be crippled in a 68 holder imo.
