Availability of coins

The uptick in the coin market seems to be pulling coins out of the woodwork.

While some may decry of the shortage of coins. Dealers seem to have adequate supply

to maintain their bussiness. Prices seem a little high for nice coins, but the auction houses

are pumping out coins like there is no tomorrow. Sure there is overgraded and recycled trash in the auctions,

but there is a lot of great stuff in all price ranges. When Laura say she purchased several million dollars of

coins at a show, that tells me that the shortage, cant be all that bad. The L.B. Show seemed to have dealers

doing a brisk retail bussiness and had the merchandise to sell.Where the market goes from here is anybodies guess.

As with the stock market, it should continue to fluctuate in its faily routine rotation and cyclic waves. Remember,

as in real estate, quality, quality. quality is the key. Regardless of the grade of coins you collect, seek the PQ

of that particular grade. They should with the passage of time be in the greatest demand.

the sheer population of CHOICE coins has definitely decreased over the past 20 years, no question about it. now, by CHOICE, i don't mean "choice for the grade", but just plain choice, attractive coins, such attractive, original VF/XF/AU draped bust quarters, copper in any grade from f - xf, again, just plain "choice" coins w/ attractive color, superb surfaces, etc.

the sole exception i'm aware of is morgan dollars. i think that's somewhat becuase they are being manufactured.

i agree w/ you that alot of fresh material is coming to market, but there's a godawful lot that has'nt seen the light of day in these past 20 years.

non-speculating collectors sit on their choicest coins for a long time. coins that may be "pq for the grade" in that they are undergraded may be uncommon, but they are not as rare as coins that are just plain choice, regardless of grade.

While I am returning far more coins then I used to, patience is required

to find the coins one desires. A collection is a never ending process of

obtaining the right coins and of upgrading others. You are correct that the

amount of PQ coins in the market place is decreasing. That can only mean thet the collecting

base is increasing. Gradflation is occuring to fill the gap, so one must be extra selective

before purchase. That extra mark on the coin that you see now, will be seen when you go

    to sell your coin.

  • I grow tired of seeking the high end coins. But I am forced to trudge onward..... But here is why I grow tired.....

    1. You have to keep SUCH a reserve of cash anymore. You never know when the magic coin is going to come out and what it will bring.
    2. You know that when this boom goes bust, these coins will be in "strong hands" and untouchable by us. Then vanish for a lifetime.

    But onward I must go.

When I hear the statement that coins were coming out of the woodwork my reaction was I wish they had stayed their [lol] Really most series that aren't gold related are still closer to their lows of 3/4 years ago then their 89/90 highs.

I agree completly that the quality pieces aren't coming on the market as much as 89. Looking at recent auction catologs I was less then impressed with the number of coins that I'd be interested in finding.

What really strikes me as curious is that lately I've noticed some dealers have had some truely great coins for sale on their retai sites yet many really thick auction catologs have had very few really nice pieces, why ??? Maybe people who could sell right away for cash to a dealer would rather do that then wait months to get their money from an auction house.

For the most part, I will not buy into a strong market in coins but if a piece comes along that is very hard to find and may not be available again in many years thats different. The quality of the coins in the recent auctions that I looked at were mostly the stuff that churns over & over. The photos of the number of coins highlighted with color picures in the last few Heritage Auctions catologs is very revieling as to how many of the coins for auction are really nice.
