Yes, some copper proofs that had specks on them. I would say they just thought they couldn't do anything without making the coin funky in some way.

Yes, they said the toning was too far gone in for them to do anything about it. It was a morgan with PL surfaces but with fugly toning. I was hoping they could do something with it.

Yes, I've had several refused. Usually it was a spot removal job where they said they couldn't remove said spot. One, though, I sent back with instructions to conserve it anyway. Came back with the ugly opaque spot reduced to barely a transparency.

Yes, I had a 39S Washington 66 in an ICG holder that I wanted some dark coloring removed from the reverse. They refused to crack it due to a planchet flaw. Amazed me because I see coins holdered all the time with planchet flaws. One of the best struck Washingtons I have ever seen.

the most recent one was the coin pictured below which looks better than the picture (yeah, yeah, i know you've heard that before, but it's true). i sent it to NCS in the SEGS PR64CAM holder because it was hazed and had carbon spotting. they sent it back with a note stating that they couldn't guarantee that the surfaces wouldn't be diminished, which i think meant that they thought the haze was what gave it the Cameo appearance.

i cracked it out and home conserved it, took it to F.U.N. and submitted to NGC. it returned as a PF65 and no Cameo designation. as such, it's rather PQ'ish with a very nice Cameo look to it, just a bit on the weak side.

it was worth the try and i have no complaints about the outcome!!image

Had them refuse a pattern once. They were afraid of what was under the toning. Wouldn't even take it w/o a grade guarantee.

The good news is, their opinion and body bag only cost $5, plus shipping costs!image

I've had them refuse a CN Indian Head cent.

I have a customer who sends coins to NCS all the time. For $5 they will review the piece and tell you if they can do anything for it. He's told me that they have returned a number of his coins because they felt that they could not do anything that would improve them.
