I put myself down for $500-1000 which is significantly less than last year. But this year I'm going to lead more with my head than with my heart on purchases.

  • I have spent wayyyy too much the past three years (around $13,000 in that period). I have one "key" (1916d Merc) to buy this year and after that I am going to fill some albums like Ike's, and Jeff's that are much, much cheaper

  • Interesting that most so far are in that 500-1000 column

You forgot the " No Clue" option. Available correct coins makes this decision if money is spent. No coins nothing spent.

This year the money I would normally spend on a watch is getting re-directed into the coin fund. That should put me at around 5K

I spend about 10K a year, and if I could, I'd spend more.

I'll be over $4,000 if I can find the coins rate the expenditure. Last year I spent more than that on the one big coin I purchased for myself last year, an 1811 half eagle in PCGS AU-55.

No, you can't buy coins like this for Gray Sheet bid, not even when you are a dealer.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • My budget is going to be $100 / month, so if I spend 300, that eats up 3 months worth of budget. However, I may make that a "net budget" as in my gross spending might actually be higher. If I sell some items that get replaced by nicer items, this income should get added back into the budget, since it simply lowers the price I paid for the upgrade. Therefore, my budget should really be set as purchases - sales = $1,200. So if I buy $1,500 worth of stuff, and sell $300 worth of stuff, I should still be OK, right?

However you want to justify it!

  • 501 - 1000. Wish I could spend more than that, but I think that I do pretty good given my budget.

You are doing well, subject 15837. You are a good person.
  • Thanks for playing, and its rather interesting to see that budgets are across the board. When I first started collecting $5.00 was a lot for any one coin....Now I don't think there is a coin that I have purchased (other than Ike's) for less than $50.00

I'm not sure how much I will spend exactly. I dont' really plan or budget for it. I buy when a nice coins comes along and seems to be a fair price. Still, that put me on the high end of your poll.

Clearly, the poll needs a better spread. Over half of the 61 respondants are planning on spending more than $4K this year. Hell, I'll bet more than a third will spend more than $10K.

Voted the (f) option, but that is no where near what I'll spend this year. Multiply by 5 and maybe it will be close.

I agree with Shamika -- there needs more of a spread. I'm already over $2000, and January's not even over yet.

Also -- there's no "Less than $100" category -- and I'm sure some folk fit in that category, Ghod love 'em.
