It should mean that the coins have wear typical of the series. The older the series the greater the level of wear.

I drew the conclusion that "Average Circulated" means Good, based on buying ads in the back of Coin World. The buying prices for older coins are higher for "G/VG" coins than they are for the same coins in "Average Circulated".

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Most of the time "average circulated" means Good from most 19th century and early twentieth century issues that saw a lot of use. For pieces that saw limited circulation, such as most gold issues, it would mean VF or so. I have never seen gold coins offered in “average circulated condition, but if they were I would expect a VF-20 to 30 coin.

For later coins, Mercury dimes, Walkers, etc, I’d expect the coins to be in VG or so.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have always taken this to mean really lousy condition. Perhaps I am incorrect in this assumption, but it seems any ad I have ever seen referring to "average circulated" really means no better than AG.

With some exceptions average circulated is used to describe AG.

I once bought several rolls of Barber quarters listed as average circulated. I expected many in G with a few VG. I got a bunch of P-AG with maybe one or two full G.

It means whatever the user wants it to mean. Used by a buyer it generally means decent G/VG. However, the buyer can reject anything you send since the term was never fully defined. Used by a seller it means "anything I send you".

Another way of defining "average circulated" might be as coins you don't want to own.
