If there were a Numismatist of the Year Award, whom would you nominate?

...and why? Let's say that the award is for the person who made the biggest impact in the field of coin collecting.

Who are some people that would have deserved such an award in the past?

Dan

  • I would vote for Mark of Pinnacle and Lara of Legend, they both give back their time to experts, and novices and all in between

Dog97.... His ongoing in your face trying to educate newbies to stay away from raw coins on ebay. And trying to tell some folks that their gems and cherry picks of the day are mainly all dipped out, re-toned fingerprinted POS. Now don't tell Dog what I'm about to say here... but the guy actually see's fingerprints in his sleep. I really think he's just a wimpy, ankle biting Poodle, and not the Bulldog he portrays... but you didn't hear that from me.image

  • Don't ever back a Dog97 in the corner.
  • I vote for David Hall - Come on now. Who has made a bigger impact? Most of you would not have anything to complain about if it were not for David creating PCGS. image

stman or keets. Both generate a sense of knowledge and they don't mind sharing it, even if at times it isn't popular advice. Each has a passion for this hobby and are protective of it. They always stand by their convictions and have a bit of a warped sense of humor to boot.

Relayer would be my third choice (should my first two decide not to accept!).

Agreed, and I usually wouldn't bet against him in the knowledge department. Although we have disagreed on a few occasions.

Wow, thanks for the honorable mention Braddick. Number 300,003 would be more like it.

To quote Jim Rockford (just before he lost the PI of the year award), I think the nomination is really the award.

For his in depth knowledge, I’d nominate Coinguy1

I can think of Copercoins, dorkkarl, and others too numerous to mention for second, but I’d also nominate Braddick, because, well, that’s what the deal was. image

The ANA's Numismatist of the Year for 2003 was Ed Rochette. The ANA has been doing this for quite a while. I don't think dorkkarl has won yet, but I could be mistaken.

Maybe it should be Alan Hager for inventing slabs? image

There are so many, but J.T.Stanton and Bill Fivaz may have some impact on collectors this year.

Hey thanks for the nomination Braddick. Although I don't win any popularity contests on here (nor do I try to) I'm surprised you have noticed my good intent on the forum. Even though you are probably laughing that I take your recommendation serious and look forward to a trophy of some sort.image

And I'd like to thank mr stman, who has an evil eye for coins too, even though he called me <<<a wimpy, ankle biting Poodle,>>>

Among board members, I always respect Bill Jones comments, he's a straight shooter who tells it like it is. Rittenhouse has done a lot of original research on the early mint, his posts are very informative.

  • Thanks John Z. I got YN of the year for 2002 and am no where near Numismatist of the year.

The ANA does have this award and usualy the winners are lifetime collectors who have devoted much more time than I could ever hope.
