The shillings are nice, but I really like the Halfcrowns of that type. Had one once but someone 'took' it from me.

    Not fair!

Now I have to go to bed with visions of your veiled Head shillings dancing in my head. Notice use of your, as opposed to mine...image

Awfully nice, though I gotta say the '94 is my favorite. Is the center of the 1900 umm, shinier? Why is that one coin's obverse different (at least on my monitor) than the others? Different lighting maybe or if that's the true nature of the coin it looks like target non-toning.image

The 1900 has a blast white obverse except around the rim. The camera reduces the amount of light it needs, leading to a darker exposure. You can see this based on the field around it. It's interesting that the reverse is beautifully toned. This is probably caused by whatever the coin sat in over the years. The rim toning suggests that the coin sat in a felt-type coin holder. Similar effects are seen on proofs of that era.

Entombed in plastic??? If so whose and at what grade???

I think I like the 1900 best - blast white with rim toning is a winner for me.

All three are NGC MS-64. I bought them that way. I rarely slab my raw coins except for some I intend to sell.

  • I have to agree with Laurent. The toning on that 1894 is stunning! I also like the reverse on the 1900. Way to go, wybrit image

Very beautiful shillings wybrit ! I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I've recently acquired a 1901 shilling with very similar toning as this, only more enhanced and covering the entire surfaces, both obv. and rev. I'm also expecting a similarly looking florin from the same date . Here's an old scan until I figure out a way to post a better picture.

It is obvious that these 300dpi scans cannot even capture 35% of the coin's real colour and lustre.

edited to add obverse - my scanner needs some cleaning image

Very nice coins wybrit (and SYRACUSIAN).

I used to pass these kinds of coins on eBay (not as nice with the toning and all) with apathy. Now I feel this insatiable urge to buy them.

I think the headline might read thus:
