I wish our coins had relief and imagery like that on them.

This was one of the medals I purchased at the NYINC, and certainly the most spectacular. Some dealer named Richard Margolis had a very nice selection of French pieces. In fact, some dude from American Heritage Minting, I think, was playing close scrutiny to the selection.

    Nice medal, btw.
  • Am I all wet, or isn't there a German medal commemorating the takeover of Alsace-Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian war? Can anyone help me out?

Ajaan, think carefully-what was your great great's name? My mother once told me everyone in Alsace-Lorraine was related and, like Switzerland, it featured a variety of european ethnic backgrounds.

Laurent, what town in the Bas-Rhin area does your mother hail from?

You're at least dry behind the ears. image Yes, there is one, but I haven't seen one in quite a while.

Laurent, this is the story I was told. It may be inaccurate.

My mom's family was originally from Scotland and was named MacDaniel. They ran into some legal troubles and emigrated to the Alsace region of Germany. They changed their name to Daniel to sound 'more Germanic'. My great³ or whatever grandfather came to the US in the 1830s.
