The Avenue of Oaks in the picture was the entrance road to Retreat Plantation in the mid 1800's, and was planted just before the Civil War. The plantation site became the Sea Island Golf Club in 1928, and I work at the Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club, which was built in 2001. So I drive down that avenue on my way to work every day! The postcard picture was taken looking north, back toward the entrance of the Avenue. The photographer had his or her back to the guardhouse gate where you enter The Lodge.

I think it may be politically incorrect to insert religion into this thread. Personally, being of the Reformed Druid faith (no oak tree worship, only small shrubberies) I am shocked that you feature so much nude timber in that 'Avenue' photo. A close up of Spanish moss may calm the anger of the holy azalea and holly spirits.
