ice maiden

I haven't looked at a lot of Icelandic coins-this one caught my fancy. I especially like the stylized reverse but the simplicity and elegance of the obverse is what caught my eye initially.

Does anyone do Iceland to any extent?

  • I have a few Iceland coins in my collection. They are quite available in Denmark where I live. But it's not a high priority area - Icelandic coins are usually cheap and fairly easy to find. The only thing that is hard to find are the proof sets. They are more available on Ebay.

  • Those silver '74 1100th anniversary of the first settlement commems are great! I hope to find them at a good price one day as well.
I have a basic type set minus the expensive ($10+) and a few of the more modern pieces. If anyone has any of the following, I'd be interested:
    50 Kr 1968
    50 au 1986
    5 Kr 1996+
    10 Kr 1996+
    50 Kr 1987+
    100 Kr 1995+

Interesting design. I don't have any coins from Iceland.

I've been working on a non-gold Iceland type set for awhile now. I'm currently missing the 1 Eyrir from 1926-39, the silver 1974 commemorative set, and the coins with a face value of 100 Kr and above.

I'm trying to decide between getting the mint set or proof set of the 1974 commemoratives. The proofs like yours are stunning!

With the coins I just got from Kulhi Link I am more than 50% complete on a full date set 1926-2000

The real pity here is that my image is off- a little fuzzy, doesn't show the cameo beauty and the coin would be nicer if I had imaged it smaller. The lines which are thin and graceful in hand tend to bulk up in the too-large image I did. But, I'm glad to see there are others who like Icelandic coins-every country seems to have beautiful things to offer. We see a lot of the same stuff here from time to time so I'm always looking for something a little different. My problem is that 9 times out of 10 what is new to me can be old hat to others.image

  • The coat of arms includes a sea eagle, dragon, bull and giant, considered the protectors of the land and are legendarily reputed to have protected Iceland against Danish king Harald Blatand's invasion.
Both coins are sterling silver (.925) with the 500 Kronur containing .5968 of an ounce and the 1000 Kronur containing .8923 of an ounce. The 1000 Kronur features the same coat of arms and a design featuring two Vikings with a blazing fire lit to mark possession of their land.
