Gold English Sovereigns

I've recently bought a few of these. Not high grade stuff (except for a QEII proof)... a Victoria and a George V. I wanted to get a George VI, but they told me that these were only made one year and are rather pricey. He was King for a while, so why only one year? Do/did they make these every year for the other Kings/Queens?

I believe the ones I have are lightly circulated. Did people use them as money? What is the monetary value of these?

So what's the scoop on these coins? If anyone would care to ramble on about these, or could point me to some good websites, I would really appreciate it!!!

Thank youimage

  • They only made George VI sovereigns for the proof set of 1937 of which 5,501 were struck, these are also plain edged rather than milled.

There were other sovereigns struck during his reign in 1949, 1951 and 1952 but these were bullion re-strikes of the 1925 sov and have a slightly wider rim.
  • Thanks!

If anyone else has any info at all about these coins, interesting or notimage, I really would love to hear it.

The gold sovereign was and still is, the world's most famous coin , period. It's been used for transactions for almost half a century after the golden standard was abandonned, because Europeans had no trust in their hyper-inflated currencies, especially after WW2. As a general rule, gold sovereigns are divided into the older ones with shield reverse and the ones with St George and the dragon reverse (Pistrucci),that are selling for bullion ,or slightly above that, unless they're uncirculated or proof (Eliz II). A fascinating coin imo, that has the added advantage of being very easy to sell, due to its popularity. I have yet to meet somebody above 60, anybody, not a coin collector, who hasn't hoarded or traded a few sovereigns at some time in his life.
