I don't think either will slab a token.

I believe that NGC slabs Conder tokens.

Check out the Southern Gold Society

  • NCG slabs tokens, but there is a size limit, I don't know off hand what it is though.

I think they'll slab anything in the Red Book, which ARRC tokens are. I've never seen them, tho' -- you might want to ask...

We would slab Alaskan Bingles if anyone ever sent one in. It has been 20 years since I seen one. There are some sets of Choice examples that were making the rounds 25 years ago or so. They are very rare in my opinion and an important U.S. issue...really a "Territorial" coin.

  • David,

    Thanks for the response.

My father purchased a complete set about a year ago. When he purchased that set, he sent me a 1 cent piece that he had already owned. See the attached picture. It's not in the greatest shape, but I think it is a neat piece of American and Alaskan history.

I wonder what size of holder you would put a 1 cent piece in, since it is octogonal. image

Mr. Hall slabbed my complete set of MS Franklins for me for free when I was 17 and stumped the experts multiple times at a contest. They loved it and I was really shocked to get my whole set graded. PCGS is great.

    Mr. Hall:

I've never seen or even heard of a bingle, but I'm pleased as all get-out that you and PCGS are willing to encapsulate this man's prized keepsakes in the name of numismatic education and preservation.

    BRAVO!
    When in doubt, don't.

  • Here is my Dad's ARRC bingle set pre-PCGS. I'm mailing them to Mr. Hall today.

Say brother, can ya spare a bingle?

I am curious as to where that term came from?
  • dorkkarldorkkarl Posts: 12,691 ✭✭✭
    named after some preacher, no?

going on memory, but i think they were issued during the 1930's.

Wonderful! Make sure to post the grades when you get them.
  • flaminioflaminio Posts: 5,664 ✭✭✭
How's this for fast service? Bingles graded. I wonder what the grades ended up being...
  • I'll ask what may be a silly question...and am not asking it to "stir the pot"....but why slab them at all ??
Is there an authenticity concern....I'm guessing not
  • Odd in what way? image Out of the ordinary? That the US government would mint aluminum and brass tokens? That the obverse and reverse are the same (bifacial)?

    haha.

I won't speak for the owner, but I would guess part of the reason is because HRH said he'd do it for free image.
  • paigow,

Slabbing these tokens started out as just a curiousity question. I had no idea if any place would slab them...

After talking to Mr. Hall, he offered to slab them, just so he could get a look at these fairly unique US minted tokens.

I think it's awesome that Mr. Hall offered and that my Dad will have (for now) the only PCGS slabbed set of ARRC bingles.

Who was talking about how neat pop 1 coins were the other day? image I have to agree.

Since PCGS has only seen this one set in its 18 years of operation, it seems like they are not all that common. Many coins should be preserved, and slabbing them will help preserve them, so why not have them slabbed? The price was VERY competitiveimage

Oh yeah -- now all you need is a Registry Set created image. Your Dad already has the Finest Known set!
  • Every once in awhile you see the tokens come up on Ebay. The .01, .05, .10, .25 inparticular, but I have never seen the .50, $1, $5 or $10.

The set that has been so graciously slabbed by Mr. Hall is my Father's.

I have started to build my own set, but I have a long way to go... I only have 3 of the 8.

    According to the Redbook:

    Quan. Minted

    $.01 5,000
    $.05 5,000
    $.10 5,000

    $.25 3,000

    $.50 2,500
    $1.00 2,500

    $5.00 1,000
    $10.00 1,000

    ALASKAN BINGLE TOKENS

Coincidentally, on my desk there happens to be a copy of
a 1955 pamphlet published by the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation
Corporation (ARRC). Titled "20 Years of Progress in the
Matanuska Valley, Alaska," it includes an article about the
ARRC "Bingle" tokens. It pictures eight different denominations
of the tokens, but doesn't shed much light on their origins.
"The 'Bingles' were only in use about six months in the winter
of 1935-36 when they were called in... No one seems certain
where the name came from... Perhaps it was more than a
coincidence that one of the foremost and best loved preachers
in the valley at that time was also named Bingle."

After asking Ron about it, he replied: "I've seen the pamphlet
but don't own one. The Alaskans use the term bingle for all
the tokens, not just the ARRC tokens. And the term appears
to predate the 1935 ARRC issue."

fair enough....and I guess if HRH offered me a freebie, I'd be on the way to the P.O. as wellimage

There are dozens of each of the smaller denominations known. The larger ones
tend to be pretty hard to find. This makes the smaller denominations fairly "common"
    by token standards.

  • Nice "odd" coins (tokens)!! This may be a silly question, but how does PCGS arrive at a 61 or 62 grade? Since these haven't been seen at PCGS for 18 years or so, how does a grader distinguish between a 61 and a 62? Couldn't they be 62 and 63? I know this sounds kind of weird, but I can see how to grade MS Lincoln wheats 'cause I've seen thousands of them ranging over almost all grade levels. But, give me a half-disme (or some other unfamiliar series) and I'd be lost. I'd have no criteria to judge what the strike should really look like, what the luster should be for, say a grade of 64. Does this make sense to anyone else?

I'm wondering if they found a print with their microscope on the .01 that ended up AU58.

  • I watch all of the ARRC bingles on Ebay. Typically, they auction for $50 to $55 for the .01, .05, .10 and .25. I've never seen the larger denominations on Ebay.

That one though... someone really had some money burning a hole in their pocket.

Wow. Looks like you got a real treasure there. Congrats to you and your dad.

Are you going to put your pictures up in the registry? I'm sure people surfing through there would like to see what they look like.

That's the first full set I have seen up on Ebay.

I know my Dad has a full set (the registered one) and my Grandfather has one.

I was thinking about bidding on the Ebay set, but that price was out of my league.
