Yes, that's a pattern piece. The baby suckling the mother's milk. FAO pattern.

Krause is no good on these. Let me go look it up in my Polish sources, and I'll get back to you in a few minutes.

Here's the skinny on that coin:

Minted only in 1971 in two versions: 1) Nickel, mintage = 500, 9.7 grams, value = 120zl = $30 US; 2) Nickel-Copper, mintage = 51,200, 9.5 grams, value = 18zl = $4.50 US. The info is from the Katalog Monet Polskich by Andrzej Fischer and Adam Lanowy. Sorry tbirde: Like I said, Krause is close, but never altogether reliable on the market value of these coins.

Cosmic, your pic appears to be one of the common Cu-Ni versions, by the green patina of the alloy. Here is one of the less common pure Ni issues:

Do I know my Polish coins?

So I suppose you want me to say something tawdry about the design now....

    OK: DD whooohoooo!!!

If I was in charge of coin design for no country in particular, it probably wouldn't occur to me to promote that image. From that I might draw the conclusion that I am not in close enough touch to my feminine side.image

No, no. You're not in touch with THE feminine side.

Motherhood is a fine theme for a coin. That is one reason I like the Sacagawea dollar.

Hey Cosmic! I just clicked on the thread.

I can see from the first photo you posted where the coin is from (WCN). Now you're stepping on my turf, did you know that?! image You're going to have to give me a good commission from now on. Actually, those guys are just down the street from me and I've done business with them for over 6 years. They're very reputable and very knowledgeable. I like to go in and shoot the breeze with them, an sometimes they ask me to authenticate things. They say that they absolutely will not export or ship out of the country, but I don't know if they in fact do or not in practice. Perhaps JohnZ has some experience with them (I suspect he has...image).

I would recommend you get some things from their auctions (held 3 times a year); however I won't because they're held on the Sabbath and therefore I can't recommend anyone buy anything on that day. But WCN is recognized as one of, if not the foremost dealer and group of experts in central Europe.

Not exactly the usual posting for you guys into the BBL theme. On the other hand, it does go with my mother-baby stuff (mostly medals though).

Hmm, none on ebay right now...oh 1jester..pm on the way image

Well, I have to admit I've never seen that coin or one quite so, uhm, "boldly artistic". image
