So they drilled a huge hole in a Spanish piece of 8?? Wow. I wonder about the silver content now, however. It seems it is way less than before. I guess that's early inflation for you...image

    Really cool piece!

Those are really cool.. heckuva chopmark, eh? image But I'll never own one image

They made modern bullion issues with holes in them based on this too.
  • The 'dump' 15 pence that made up the center is also a neat and expensive piece.

I was wondering what they did with the punchout... must look kinda neat-a disembodied face and shoulders. A 15 pence "dump" you called it-what are they worth?

  • Cool, I've never actually seen a picof one (outside of Krause). Reminds me of the P.E.I. holey dollar of the same period.

There was a rare one, with its dump, auctioned off a couple years ago or so. It was big news.

They are the 1804 dollar of Australian numismatics.

The first government in Australia had a hard time keeping coins in circulation. Traders who came by oftentimes took the 8 reales coins they were using valued at 5 shillings, so they punched out the center to intentionally make they overvalued. The holey dollar kept the nominal value of 5 shillings, and the punched out "dump" was valued at 15 pence. The dumps were worth more as bullion than their nominal value, so they continued to disappear from circulation.

  • A dump in a low grade of VG would set you back thousands.
