references for florins

I was asked by a novice collector, about references and price guides specific to British florins. Any suggestions (besides Spink) ?

edit: also a book on the history of florins (if any)

    The usual sources apply:

    Spink
    Coincraft (not for prices)
    Marles annual guide

    British Coins Market Values 2004

The last two are cheaper buys if you just want prices.

Thank you. That's what I thought. It's a shame though . US coins have at least three volumes per denomination , if not more, filled with useful information.

You can also refer to Davies or ESC, but again not a lot of information specific to florins is there.

Without diving for the book I think Coincraft say that the Florin is virtually unexplored territory compared to the more popular variety pursuits, and could be a worthwhile collecting field. As stated above, Davies and ESC should be added to Coincraft and Spinks.

    EDIT TO ADD:
There are a few collectors over here finding things on Florins that should have been found a long time ago. For instance there is a rare and documented instance of the 1854 Florin with a spelling error ONC for ONE TENTH. Undocumented is that they have between them amassed 32 examples of the 1855 56 57 58 and 59 with the same error. Not a dickybird from the "experts".

There are apparently many other anomolies that are totally ignored.

As far as values go, he really must stay with the Spinks guide - you have to go with THE reference in situations like this. I've had guys mailing me to ask about the discrepancies of my List/Ebay prices to their books. The values they have would mean that they would be able to buy some dates over an over again but others would always seem grossly unfair.

I don't want to knock Tony Clayton's site because it is good, academic hard work, but the values there are really naff and meaningless.

British Dealers use Spinks, and that's that.

  • Wybrit, did you know, that new design for 1 pounds coins, that I have seen at one of your books ( with bridge) will be also for usual circ, pounds coins or only for proof , silver coins? Have you any pictures or links of that new design?

    Thanks in advance!image

Link to Coin Magazine cover (caution: very big jpg)

I expect that the £1 coins will be issued in the same manner as previous dates: business strike, UNC in folder, standard proof, silver proof, perhaps a silver piedfort proof and a gold proof. The 2004 coin will feature the first of four bridges.
