Blackhawk's New Years Giveaway - All Over but the Shoutin'

OK...with the thread way back on page five, I'm going to call an end to the sign-up...but I've got a new wrinkle for the contest. To repay those on the board who have filled my spare time (and some time that my wife would have rather had me doing something else) with laughs, knowledge and fellowship, I've decided that the contest will now switch to a "lets make a deal" contest.

There were 21 posters who signed up for the giveaway. I have assigned numbers to all posters by their posting order (Kuhli-1, Nanda-2, and so on). Twenty one numbers were then randomly mixed by a numbers generator and the order in which they came will be the giveaway order. Here's how the giveaway will work. The names of the contestants are listed below in the order that the numbers generator picked. The first name on the list will have their pick...the South African 1D and the Canadian token...or the mystery coin(s). Now you'll have to trust me on this - I'll pick a coin or coins before the choice and none will be complete duds, but some will be worth more than others. If the first name on the list picks the shown coins, then the second gets the pick of the coin(s) that were turned down (the pics will then be shown) or another mystery coin. I know that this may take some time, but since most are on here every day, it shouldn't be too bad. To keep things straight on my end, when you win something, drop me a PM with your addy and what you've won so that I can send it out. I did not think of this while drunk or hungover, as some of you may think image

The next to pick is Newbiecollector. You can either choose the 1968 and 1969 dollar proofs from Liberia shown below (in a very bad photo) or the mystery coin. The two Liberian coins have low mintages - the 1968 mintage about 14,500...the 1969 mintage slightly over 5000.

Wayne...you gotta take both proofs, they go together!

Here's the coin that you turned down. Izzy452, you've got the next pick...do you want this 1919 half crown with the lamination error on the obverse or the mystery coin? Please post your answer.

  • It starting to be very exciting, Blackhawk! Could you explain me please , what is it "lamination error"image Thanks in advance for explanations and congrats to Newbie!

If you look to the left of the King's bust, you'll see a area that looks like a gouge in the metal. The metal that the coin is made of may have had impurities or the alloy was not mixed well, resulting in areas in the planchets where the metal peels away or cracks. Part of this one has come loose and has gotten folded over on itself, resulting in an area on the coin where metal is missing.
    "Have a nice day!"
  • Thanks for the explanations, Blackhawk--very interesting, for me it looks like a real gouge, but now you have cleared it for me. Just one thing... you mean "If you look to the right of King's bust" isn't it ?image

Izzy, the mystery coin is actually the set of coins (Israel - 1969) pictured below.

  • I'll take the half-crown. Am narrowing down my collecting, and Britain is one country that I want to work on.

  • Thank you very much , Bill!! I just couldn't find any words to express how I like that coin image Actually, I try to complete my naval coin's theme by the coins which depict such pionners and travelers as Columbus, Vasko de Gama and others. So I have looked for any coin from Panama, because them (almost all if I'm not mistaken) has that guy at the obv.!!! And that Balboa will take a honourable place in my collection, because it will remind me .... Jester imageimageimage each time I'll look at the coin! imageimage
