Is it penny-wise, pound-foolish to use Ebay's free listing days?

Ebay tends to do a free listing day at a time when they expect volume to be slow due to holidays. Does it make sense to save the 30 cents to $2.20 per listing when you might not get as good a final price as you would otherwise because buyers are scarce when the auction ends?

Bad time to list ANYTHING. Stuff does not sell well over any holiday and particularly when the holiday falls on a weekend.
  • I took advantage of it on some proof sets, where the 30 cent savings is fairly significant. I have a few coins that I expect to go over $100 that I'm waiting to list because the 30 cent savings is pretty insignificant there.
  • I don't see any downside (except your time) if you have a fixed price you want. Slap it up there at that price and see what happens... no fees unless it sells.

I did it the last time around, but I paid the 10c for a 10-day listing to get it to end on the weekend and away from the rest of the herd, plus paid 25c for a gallery photo on most of the items. So not quite free, but cheap.

And I sold a few things so it worked out.

  • As I sell books, mostly with buy it now, it is great for me. Only costs me .05 cents for buy it now. I also list the same book a few times if i have multiple copies. Also have World Coin and Paper Money books from Krause. It works out OK for me. Wish they would do it about 8 times a year. Seems to be about twice a year tho. JMHO. Steve

Timing was perfect for me. I had some fixed price listings that were expiring and were going to be relisted anyway.

  • I was going to post the same thing as supercoin. Start it at the price where you can make money of it sells. if not, all you lost was your time posting it.

    Too late now.

Yeah, you can do that. Prob is with the number of listings generated by the promotion your stuff gets lost in the sauce. Also a lot of people away for the holidays. You might get your price, but you rarely maximize during holidays.

OTOH, friends & I have ripped a good bit of stuff during holidays, so maybe it is a good idea if YOU list.
