PL Roanoke

Forgot to mention this. Saw a ProofLike Roanoke Commemorative in an ngc ms/64 holder (looked very nice for the assigned grade too!) nice PL look to the coin with light gold at the rims.
I couldn't recall seeing one of those, some PL Columbians, but never a Roanoke.
How popular are PL Commem's?
Any cultish crew seriously persue these?
I briefly checked the POP's, they aren't plentiful, by any means.

*Oh yes, the dealer was looking for $600ish money for the coin. Seemed to steep for me, but I really didn't know.

BigD5, some of the "common" PL commems are quite affordable, not to mention, neat looking. Even the scarcer ones are sometimes available at realistic premiums / price levels.

We have a few clients who buy them whenever the coins can be found at reasonable levels.

PL commems and gold classic commems were what I wanted to add to my collection 2 years ago. The New Rochelle is awesome in PL because of the large fields on both sides of the coin. If you`re looking for PL commems check this coin out!

    hey Darin

every once and a while i see a PL, the last being a Columbian at the October P.A.N. Show that the seller had listed as a Proof. it was raw, a bit pricey and baggy so i let someone talk me out of it. the commems that look even nicer to me are the ones with a frosty appearance over the entire coin. at the same show i saw a Long Island and a Huguenot. considering the low mintages of some coins in the series, strikes with these characteristics should be seen more often. i imagine they are held long term whenever they show up for sale and get snagged. hesitators like us need to start pulling the trigger!!image

BTW, i noticed a Proof 1892 Columbian listed on eBay last night, PR64 PCGS if i remember correctly.

There were some New Rochelle commemorative half dollars that were intentionally made with a different finish. The ones I have seen had a proof-like look to them, which I found kind of cheesey, but they still bring something like a 25% premium. These coins are NOT Proofs by any means.

Most other PL commemorative half dollars are just first strikes. They do bring a slightly higher prices, but they are not caught on like P-L dollars. I've also never seen a cameo example, but maybe that's because I just have not seen enough of them.

There were New Rochelle presentation pieces made. PL New Rochelle`s don`t look cheesy to me. I love the large reflective fields. They go for much more than a 25% premium. You can`t buy a Pl 65 for $400 figuring a non PL goes for about $300.

  • A lot of the Commems designated PL are really just semi-PL, and many have simply been blasted or through the NCS process. True original PL commems are difficult to come by. Here's a New Rochelle in NGC MS-67 PL that just came through here last week. An old holder super gem with an obverse that looks like it was plated in chrome while the reverse being very similar is a bit more striated. You can see your reflection in it from an arm's length away. I had to tilt it just a bit to keep the image from looking like just every other white coin so the reflection is a little funky, but the eye appeal was incredible.
