What has your experience been with Grading Services Guaranty??

Last few months I sent one coin to ANACS for review and one coin to NGC for review. I purchase both coins on the net, basically sight unseen, because they were in these slabs and were the coins I wanted. This was not a test for these services but both coins were overgraded, both should have been body bagged.

1. ANACS---Paid immediately, made 3 phone calls to me to make sure that I was satisfied and got a letter. $400 transaction. To say the least,I am very happy with the service at ANACS.

2.NGC------Paid after several calls from me to them and had to send them a letter requesting payment after they down graded my coin.$200 transaction. I am not unhappy with NGC,they took care of business and was very apologetic on the phone. I do wish, however that they were more responsive to start with.

What has your experience been???

  • I really wish people would stop asking this question. It always ends the same, someone, such as myself, that has had bad experiences with the grading guaranty posts of his/her experiences and then someone else posts that the first person doesn't know what he's talking about and is a liar. Ill save you the trouble of that post Russ.

Moral of the story, different people have had different experiences. Fingerprints are easy; moderns graded ms70 with marks are easy; cleaned classic coins are not.

I've got to say that I've never tried to make a grading claim because I never purchase coins without looking at them first, OR when I'm dealing with someone I know who offers an iron-clad return policy.

The only adjustment experience that I've had was when I purchased a white coin that went bad in the holder because the dip had not been neutralized properly. PCSG took the coin back, dipped it, and it came back to me looking OK. It's not a great coin, and sorry Arkansas lovers, but I don't care for that "old commemorative." The flapper and the Indian on the obverse just don't do anything for me, but it fills the hole in my type set.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Smooth, simple and fair transaction with PCGS. Bought an 65DMPL off ebay with low quality auction pics but thinking dmpls are hard to photograph anyway. When received the mirrors just looked PL at best. Notified pcgs on the issue and followed their resubmit instructions. Can back reholder as 65 along with a $900 check which fairly made up the value difference. Happy with the whole experience and assured my trust in the Guaranty system. Boy it is a PQ 65 too image

Edited to add picture of it...as you can see with slab type this happen a few years ago image

My only experience (PCGS; proof 2¢) was a positive one. It took a while, but there was no hemming/hawing/arguing and the check arrived promptly when the settlement was agreed to.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Positive..............

I took a 1960 PCGS PR67CAM Washington Quarter to David Hall at one of his Long Beach "Come Meet Me" gatherings. Well I show him the coin and it has a lovely thumbprint across the face of Washington and the left field. He says to me "Well how do I know PCGS put that fingerprint there, it could have been on the coin for years, you could have put it on there, or perhaps someone in a galaxy far far away (nice Star Wars touch) could be responsible for it."

I thought to myself, this isn't going well, but I had a trick up my sleeve.

So I turned the coin over and said -- "well I don't think the piece of hair trapped in the slab came from any other galaxy other then PCGS!"

His reply -- "Carol, get a form, we gotta buy back this coin."

Surprisingly he gave me FULL PCGS Price Guide money for the coin, so I actually made some money off of it since I bought it for $5 and had it slabbed.

I doubt if he'll be so nice next time though. image

  • wow - that is alot better than the pay them for looking and shipping that usually occurs

I will have to try that on my next one

PS - how did you get the hair into the slab?

    geb209,

You made a unilateral assertion that the grading service would not honor the guarantee. Specifically, here is what you said:

<< <i>You could never make a profit using the grading guarantee. No matter how overgraded or how cleaned, the grading company will say its our opinion and we stand behind it. While there open to honoring the guarantee for fingerprints, overgraded or cleaned? You can bet your life, NO! >>

    Clearly, you are wrong.

  • GREAT story, FrattLaw! He was greatly overpaid for that $30 decision.

Big Daddy? I hope you don't call him that in private. image

Respect PCGS? Now where did you ever get that idea from? Not my posts!

I am still waiting for PCGS to do something about the fingerprinted MS70 Smithsonian Dollar I sent to them almost two months ago. I still have not heard a thing from them. I called them up about two weeks ago and they said it was waiting to be finalized. That was two weeks ago.
