What is the Cheapest Date Morgan Dollar I Can Get in PCGS MS66?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would like one nice specimen for my collection, but don't know enough about the series to make the judgment. My guess would be maybe the 1880-S coins.

Aside from the date, how cheap, or expensive, would MS66 coins be?

I have looked on eBay and have found a wide range of prices for the MS66 grade.

Thanks. Richard.

Shoot for the 1886 Philly - It's got the lowest MS66 (not PL or DM) list price at PCGS of only $275.

    Good luck and have fun!

I'd go for an 1881-S. It's common and it will probably look nicer than an 1886-P. The bid is the same as the 1886-P. 1880-S and 1882-S might work also.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with a 1879S-1882S morgan. To me, they are the best dates of the series. Not for mintage but for strike and luster and affordability.

Excuse me for asking, but why in the heck would you want to waste your money on a "cheap 66" as a specimen for your collection? Do you really believe 1 point grading? Do you think that scarcer dates and all mints are graded the same so you can use a common to cherry tougher? If you just wanna own a 66, take a freakin' piece of masking tape and make your own grade. Heck a grade is just an opinion anyway & who's to say your opinion is less than others?

Regardless of what you're collecting, save your money and buy a real coin. You'll end up way further ahead. Remember: 1. There's a reason they are cheap. 2. Cheap collectors end up with cheap collections.

    If you're hell bent on wasting your money, 79s, 80s, 82s, 84o, 85o, 86p, etc.

Maybe he's a Type Coin collector. I picked the commonest WLH for my example of the design:

    Rittenhouse,
Yes you should ask to be excused after a post like that. I would guess the person is a type collector, looking for a nice Morgan example for the set. What is wrong with inquiring what dates/mints are lowest priced in MS66? He didn't ask where can I get the crappiest looking 66 at the lowest price. Easy trigger.

It is a good thing I am in a so-so mood after a comment like that. image Since I am a nice guy, I will ask you to explain what you are trying to say. Are youy saying I should just buy MS65 examples? Or are you saying I should invest thousands and buy an MS67 example?

    itsnotjustme,

I'm tryin' to get him to think (and others, too). Even if you're a type collector picking the cheapest leaves you with a "cheap collection". Sounds great when you're spending the money, but when the time to sell comes along (and it ALWAYS does), the cheap collector ends up finding out just how cheap these coins are.

Also, common doesn't necessarily = cheapest. Baley's common 43 Walker looks like a pretty nice strike, attractive toning, great luster. This could be a "breath-taker" in person. I know type collctors who specialize in super attractive "common" coins in whatever grade they collect for their type sets. They have impressive collections and do very well.

But that wasn't what rampage asked. He wanted to buy the cheapest. He's picking on price rather than appearance. And maybe he thinks he can lean grading from one example, I don't know him. In any case, he's gonna end up with a piece of plastic instead of a coin. He might even realize that in time and then be very disappointed in his selection, and even more disappointed if he tries to sell/trade.

The principal is simple. Collect the coin not the plastic. If you can afford a "cheap 66" then you can well afford 30 - 50% more for a real nice coin even if it ain't a 66. Same is true for any grade.

Please guys, THINK! This is real money you're spendin'; ain't like 50 cent for a Coke and you spill it, big deal. Get your money's worth and create a GREAT collection.

  • Richard;
The 80-S & 81-S Morgan are the easiest to acquire in that grade designation for the $$$ you'd like to spend. Most times you can find the above in 66 that have mirror-like surfaces....shop around and good luck....image

Well I'm a type collector and I can't see spending a zillion dolars for a Morgan dollar type coin unless you want a Proof. A hand picked 1881-S can be a great type coin because it has luster, sharpness of strike and is generally a great example of the design for about as low a price as you can find.

I've known some type collectors who wanted to fill the holes with key dates only. Not I. I'd sooner spend my bigger money on the early type coins (1793 to 1807) in nice condition, which for me most often is a nice AU.

Rittenhouse, I am looking for a coin that is accurately graded. I don't buy the plastic. I am not a professional grader, but I do know a dog when I see it. When I stated MS66, that is the appearance I am looking for. If you specifically wanted to see "super strike, and blah blah blah", then I am sorry. To me, an MS66 states what appearance I am looking for.

    Thank you.

Well I understand what both Rittenhouse & Rampage is trying to say.
Rampage wants a common low priced high grade date, probably for a Type Set, and Rittenhouse is telling him not to buy the cheapest first thing he finds, which will probably be a overgraded fingerprinted 65 with dip retone in a 66 holder on sleazeBay.
When you find one Rampage, just call me & ask me what I think and I'll tell you if it is a good one or not. image

....or maybe rampage is like me, I also wanted a sharply struck, lustrous Morgan that showed off what the original designer intended us to see. I neither cared that it was a common date or what I might be able to resell it for in the future. The San Fransico dates of 80,81 and 82 can satisfy this want. They tend to be well struck, eye appealing and lustrous.
