Beautiful !939 Vatican Coin Found at Local Shop

Found this at a local coin shop today. I have to tell you, it is one of the most beautiful toned coin I have seen in person. The devices on the reverse are just totally framed in an electric blue that my camera does not do justice to.

The coin was raw, in a 2X2 graded "Gem Bu." All in all, the price was less than sending in a single coin to PCGS to be slabbed--

  • The luster is just glowing under the toning, Cosmic. And again, the blue on the reverse is so much more visible in hand. The halo around our boatsman just glows blue.

Also, these shots tend to make the couple of hits on the coin jump out. You really don't notice them as much eye-balling it.

    This is one hip coin.

A beauty-my coin shops don't have a single toned coin left in their inventory-everybody's after them. image

Carol posted to a thread earlier on the open forum concerning replacment of certain icons, among them the ubiquitous thumbs up.

Is it? I must confess I really have no idea. I would be interested in a little schooling on Vatican coins if anyone one has the patience or inclination.

Mintages were relatively low for all types, especially the earlier ones, and popularity seems to fluctuate. These coins are at least as rare as those darned euros but are a lot cheaper because fewer people are chasing them. image

I guess that means more for us. image

Only 20,000 minted, smallest outside of the 1929 mintage of 10k, $22.50 in UNC-Krause and probably a lot higher for that one

  • $22.00--- that's exactly what our dealer had it posted at.

    I didn't haggle.

I actually hadn't been in there in months, but I popped in today because I remembered seeing a nicely toned cased 1971 Canadian dollar there way back when. Yep, it was still there. I bought that too.
It's not as nice as Dark Horses' new one, but cool nonetheless.

Those Vatican coins came in cardboard holders, which usually tone the silver coins very nicely.
  • Yes, I've seen sets on eBay, and been kind of drawn to them, but never pulled the trigger.

I also remember seeing a couple BU white examples at shows and thinking they were interesting coins.

This was a one of those cases though where I just looked down into the case, my eye went right to this coin, and I said "I want that."

    Sweet coin.
    Great year.

    (Mine's white)

Now you have got to find the companion Sede Vacante. That is a excellent design on both sides.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Just want to let you know I sell a lot of Vatican coins, and in most cases Krause is way off the mark on valuations. A lot of the silver 500 and 1000 Lire issues that Krause has for around $30 regularly sell for almost twice that much.
P.S. That's an AWESOME coin! image
