Hi All,
I know that there are a lot of 1965 set collectors out there and just wanted to get your opinion about this card.
I just received notification today that My #22 Charlie Smith came back a psa 8!
The serial number on the card is 40280859.
Should I put the card up on ebay for auction or do any of you that need the card want to make me an offer?
I would consider taking back a psa 7 plus some cash if that helps.
I also have a PSA 9 available of Johnny Blanchard, which has a pop of 2 in this grade.
You can post your ideas on the board or email me at jeej67@hotmail.com.
Happy holidays to all!

Please email me at jbasilone@adelphia.net....I will make a very strong offer on the Charley Smith card.
John Basilone
All the ones I've seen incl some 8's were oc top to bottom, w/ the 8's being a tad oc, and the 7's a bit more.
How is your centering? Does it fit that same pattern?...jay

<< <i>The Charlie Smith 8 that I previously owned was a very weak 8 at best. >>
Wayne, you are being generous. That card is likely a PSA 6 if submitted in the last 9 months. That Smith had centering, corners, edges, and registration issues.
Great submission result miami3. You should do well in selling #22.
CU turns its lonely eyes to you
What's the you say, Mrs Robinson
Vargha bucks have left and gone away?
hey hey hey
hey hey hey
I think he might...I never heard from the owner. Maybe Wayne got it.
Thanks for the reply!
I just got the card back from PSA via FEDEX this morning and I would say that the centering is 50-50 LR and
60-40 TB.
I do not have access to a scanner otherwise I would email you a picture of it, its a real beauty!

Jim

If you put Blanchard on ebay you will lose me as a potential bidder.

Although he may lose you as a bidder if he lists it on ebay . He hasnt very likely lost a top 2 bidder for this card. If the past holds
true you have not been a Major player when it comes to low pop PSA 8's and PSA 9's from the 60's sets
Guys-
First of all...I like the 1965 Topps talk...but lets get a few things straight.
1.) The last Charlie Smith PSA 8 on eBay went for over $500.00. This was several months ago. Keep in mind at the time there was a gentlemen who just needed that card to complete his set in 8 or higher. This was Skipm.'s card...that he sold when he broke up his 65 set.
2.) Regarding the Blanchard....is is a POP 2 and the Duke as 1 of them. So where does that leave us....2 bidders. One is the gentlemen who is second place on the registry...the other bidder is a well known Yankees collector. (Im trying to leave out username to protect the innocent).
Dave...are you prepared to bid over $200.00 for that card...when you could just get a PSA 8 for your set? (Not sure if you have one already).
John
In my dearly departed '65 set (stopped at 96.6%) - The "going rate" for the 2 or 3 Smiths in PSA-8's that came up in that span was always around $300.00. And my thought process was....As much as I need it, how can I pay $300+ on an $18.00 smr card? Cause eventually my finances will dictate me selling the set, and with that in mind if I sell the set at 100% of smr I only get $18.00 back on it. So I ended up getting a nice albeit top to bottom oc Charlie Smith PSA-7 on eBay for around $20ish which was double SMR for a PSA-7. Then I grabbed a common high pop PSA-9 common for about $45 and viola - my common PSA-7 of Smith + the common 9 equaled a grade of 8, and combined I still paid under SMR for the pair.
When I broke my set up, the DUKE got my Smith PSA-7...jay

Did you decide what you're going to do with the card? I know charlie smith is very fond of Indiana.
Wayne
If you got the card, will that mean that you'll buy other 8's for your all-9 set or would this the only one???

Thanks for all of your information on this card.
I have not yet decided what to do with it.
I did some research over the weekend and found that this card is one of the hardest Topps cards of all time to find graded in a PSA 8.
With a pop of 3 in psa 8 you will not find more than 1 or 2 other cards made from 1952 to the present that are that low.
In other years that I collect (59-75), a low pop card in an 8 usually has 6-10 examples known.
Maybe I should donate the card to the Topps/PSA hall of fame?

Even now at pop 4 there are so few cards with that low of populatkions in the basic sets of any year in the 60's.
Wayne
Wayne-
Your right..the POP is now 4. The big question is where that sole PSA 9 example is....now that is a mystery!
I think this seller may let us battle it out on eBay...as I have not heard from him either.
John
Wayne
I have never seen or heard of someone having the psa 9 either. It could have very well been posted as a 9 in correct by PSA.
As far as I can tell, there are only a handful of vintage Topps cards (from 1952 to 1975) that have under 5 pop 8's.
Many of the 6-10 pop cards from the sixties will go for 15-20X SMR if they ever come up on ebay, so the high prices show that there really is a big demand for these toughies.

Jim

from Indiana who is working on a high grade set.
I think that most of you 65' collectors out there in psa land know who I am talking about.
I thank all of you for your words of wisdom about this card and wish you all of the best in 2004!

You never contacted me regarding my offer...oh well. You never know how high I would of gone. Your loss is Wayne's gain.
Congrats Wayne!

Just put him in the "penalty box", John.
JEB.
What does a '62 Blanchard go for? Are you talking about a PSA 8?
John
He can most likely buy 2 of those Blanchards now.
Maybe 3 if he would of contacted me.
Yes, I can buy 2 or 3 of the Blanchards for what I sold the 65 Smith for if I can only find one for sale.
The last 62 Blanchard in psa 8 grade went off on ebay about 2 weeks ago for over $400.00.
I have two 62' Blanchards in psa 7 that I got for under 40.00 each, so I have a hard time coming up with that much extra cash to upgrade to an 8.
I decided to sell the 65 Smith in psa 8 (to the un-named person in Indiana )at a fair price for both of us.
I'm sorry that I didnt contact you about the card, I must have deleted your email in error.
I have other high end 65 material in storage and will go through what I have and will see if I have another Charlie Smith that will get an 8 and will let you know if I do.

Jim

I've looked and looked and can't find anywhere on this thread where the price between the buyer and seller was disclosed by either of them to be $700.
Please point it out to me if I missed it.
On the other hand, the rest of us should show the common courtesy to refrain from posting the price of a private transaction without the consent of the parties involved. Do do otherwise is petty and smacks of unprofessionalism.
I, too, lost out on the Smith. My bid, directly to the owner, was obviously too low. No problem. You won't find me pouting and talking out of class about it. Nor have I seen others, except for Mr. Basilone.
Toppsgun-
Go Away.
Toppsgun-
You might have to break 3 figures to get the Smith card.
You'll get'em next time champ.
Thank you for your opinion and offer on the card.
I agree with you 100%.
Due to the fact that it was a private transaction I did not post the selling price of the card nor did I disclose the name of the person who purchased the card.
If the seller wants to discuss this information with you in private or on this board thats up to him.
If I come accross another 65 Smith ins psa 8 shape I will contact you privately as it seems as some people on this board take this stuff a little too personally.

Jim

GGGR-
Davalillo has had that card for a long, long time in PSA 8....check his registered set for details
I'd be thrilled to own a Smith-8 someday. Actually I have one already, but it's got that dreaded qualifier. Jay (quality cards) posted once in response to this same disclosure, something to the effect of, "Hey, toppsgun it's an 8, even if it is o/c." That is a great attitude to have.
Something a lot of "sore losers" on this board could learn from.
BTW, I think you handled the whole thing very well from start to finish. The price I offered you, while much higher than I've ever paid for any common card, I didn't really expect you to accept. But you did the right thing in taking offers, then selling privately to one of our own.
The 'gun
Please dont be a tattle tale and tell on me.
I guess that I should be in the penalty box, cause I never contacted Dav due to the fact I knew I could get at least 100% of SMR ($22.00) if I sold it to anyone else.

Thanks for the kind words.
I have been in this "hobby" since 1975, so I kind of think that I know what I am talking about.
I have seen many of your posts on this board and obviously you are a very experienced collector as well.
I will contact you if I come across any more nice 65 Smith cards.
I typically have between 5-10 of each card from 1960-1980 in their raw state, I just have to find them in my warehouse.

Jim

Jim,
I may need you to turn on the private message feature in your profile. I'd like to send you a (short) list of the cards in a couple of my completed sets that could use a little upgrading. Either that, or take me on a tour of your warehouse.
Regarding collecting in general, yes, I've been at this hard core for about 14 years since rediscovering my childhood collection. I've had my share of great finds and good buys, but I'm always fascinated by people who come forward with presentation set cards and vending. I never had any of that as a kid. Just the wax. That's cool, too. My heart beats a little faster reading recent (ejguru?) posts about opening up '67 packs.
Anyway, I look forward to helping each other out in the future. Now turn on that PM feature or click on the orange-colored lock in the upper right of my post and give me your email.
I just realized his email is located in the very first post of this message.
Bad form on my end..I must admit.
Anyways...its good to know that there are people out there that will jump at the chance to spend bid dollars on PSA commons. Thats good news for all of our collections.
John
I just activated the private mail option on my profile so please feel free to contact me with you needs and I will see if I can help you out with anything.

I have also been following this thread with much interest like Toppsgun stated.I (for some unknown reason have just jumped into the 65 set) with a couple of recent purchases.I would like to know some of the nuances of the 65 set as well as a few pricing parameters if some of you 65 gurus will part with it.
I did not get to read Basilones post that seemed to rile some up but it seems that He was honorable to edit it and give an honest admission of error on his part. That is the kind of person that I think draws me to this set.It seems, also that you 60's collectors are more of a brethern than most and I also like that.I am mainly a 55/56 collector and this is my first foray into the "modern"era .Hopefully,I will learn much in the near future.I will be building this set slowly as my other two sets are my first priority right now.
John,
I for one, appreciated your candid post when you realized your error.
