When did NGC start giving the Cameo designation for proof Franklins?

I have a neat '56 Frankie here. It looks cameo. It is in a NGC-4 holder (Condor101's number, thanks for writing the slab book!) which I understand was used from '88 to around '92.

I wish there were a table in Condor's book that correlated changes in grading with slabs!

The bell is DCAM but the yoke is cam in the middle. The obverse looks like it could cam.

  • Too bad it's not a type I - that'd be worth a nice chunka change then image
  • PCGS did not start using the Cam Dcam designations until sometime between 1990 and 1995 (My PCGS 4 slab) but I don't know when during that period it began. If it began near the beginning of the PCGS 4 slab usage, then they MIGHT show up near the end of the NGC 4 slabs. If it wasn't until later in the PCGS 4 run then it probably would first show up on the NGC 5 slabs. I do have an NGC 5 slab that has the Cameo designation.

How about it, does anyone have an NGC 4 slab with Cameo or DCAM? Anyone have an NGC 3?

What kind of "changes in grading" are you looking for? Obviously it sounds like you would like to know when each of the various designations were added or dropped, Do you want that for all companies or just the majors? If you want to known when grading STANDARDS changed, you are on your own.

Yes that would be very helpful! If one thinks a coin deserves a star or cameo or FBL or something it would help to know if the grading company has rendered an opinion or not. In this case my guess is they haven't given an opinion on Cameo, just grade. Personally I'm only interested in NGC and PCGS slabs so wouldn't care about the other services.
  • It dosen't look CAM to me. Is the pic bad or is that what the coin really looks like.

I have about 6 PCGS PR 67 Cameos here, a DCAM and an Ultra Cam. The above coin has better frosting than all the Cameos, but not as good as the DCAM or Ultra Cam, except the bell which is very comparable. The fields are similar for all the 67 coins, good reflections but not perfect mirrors. So I guess the photo isn't great image

I looked at 2/1990 NGC pop report - it lists both PF and PF CAM Franklin 50c, no ULTRACAM. Looking at PCGS 11/1991 report shows only PF designation for Franklins ; 3/1992 PCGS report lists PF, CAM and DCAM for Franklins. CAM Designations for Franklins started at PCGS sometime between these dates, perhaps 1/1 1992.
  • Thanks Emzee that really helps out. It confirms that we were right on when PCGS started, during PCGS 4 and apparently midway through their issuing period. We now know that NGC DID use the CAM designation during NGC 4 and that they were using it at least two years before PCGS started.

Feb of 90 would have been halfway through the issuing period of NGC 4, we need to see some earlier and later pop reports to determine when NGC started CAM and Ultracam.

(I knew there was a reason I've started looking at buying old pop reports.)
  • Yes that does help a lot.

I learned that NGC most likely did review this coin for the cameo designation and didn't give it out. So I will accept that and not have the coin reviewed. After looking again this morning it appears Frankie's lapel might lack enough frost.
