Large coin shows: typical program?

Greetings, All --

I was curious as to what goes on at a large coin convention besides the displaying and selling of coins.

Are there ever special events like award ceremonies, lectures, recreation for those spending the night, etc.?

Is there enough to do even for those who aren't manning tables?

Dan

It all depends upon the show. If it is run by a promoter and is strictly a commercial show there may be no lectures or outside events and activities. If it is run or sponsored by a club, there could be educational forums and perhaps exhibits. If the show is run by a club and the spouses (usually the ladies) are active, there could be tours and events during the day to occupy their time.

The only way to tell is to contact the people who are running the show. I’ll tell you that a show like FUN and ANA will have lots of activities. The upcoming Baltimore show is mostly concerned with the buying and selling.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

As BillJones says it really depends on the show. Some of the really large shows can have a lot of outside activities for collectors including specialty club meetings, lectures etc. The fall ANA Convention it really one of the best for these events. They publish a listing of all the activities in Coin World and Numismatic News. I like to plan out my activities using those schedules ahead of time as if I was going to be there for the entire show. Last year, if I had been there for the entire four days I would have spend a grand total of 7 hours on the bourse floor and 49 hours at various meetings, lectures and events. I just wish I could actually get to more of them.

In all fairness to Ed and Gordon, they have expressed on this forum the willingness to donate space to any groups that would care to meet at the Baltimore show. I think i remember the EAC meeting there.
