    03 looks AU58 R/B
    06 looks MS63 R or R/B

They probably graded the 03 MS63. So are we suppose to guess the true grade or what is on the slab?image

Grading these are still a toughy for me but I,ll give it a go......

    The `03 is UNC....MS62

    The `06 is UNC...MS63

    Are they NGCs or ANACSs..

GREEN PCI... this is back when they were respectable... if not much tighter than current PCGS. A lot of people have had luck upgrading, even by a few points, recently... gold PCI is what's terrible...

The first one has been messed with and is not a natural color so I would say UNC. details cleaned/recolored. The second one is a nice looking original coin MS63RB. mike image

Both are nice coins. The first coin is at best a 58 using NGC or PCGS grading standards. I think the reason most of you graded it MS was because of the obverse. Study the reverse, in particular the words one cent. They show signs of wear, which I think should make it a 58.

This Guess the Grade thread is probably the most interesting one that I have participated in. The diverse grades given to the 03 were quite interesting. Irishmike has given his reason for the grade he put on the coin and it would be of interest if some of the other people would chime in also.

My reason for the grade I gave the 03 was because of the different color change in the fields directly in front of the Indian on the obverse and around one cent on the reverse. A long time dealer friend told me to always look for this when looking at copper coins. He said that this darkness was a dead give away that the coin had seen some minor circulation even if the coin shows very little if any wear to your eye.

Of course we all were at a dis-advantage. A picture is not the same as holding the coin in hand. Still this was interesting.

I didn't guess AU58 because APN said both were unc. image
