coin theft at local show

in U.S. Coin Forum
A coin was stolen at the nov 16 th hartford connecticut coin show . It is an 1803/2 $5 gold , ICG au53 , # 2519480901 . Small horizontal scratch on neck and hair area ,and a mark between the 8 and 0 in the date . If anyone sees this coin , contact David at 860 599 1571 , or officer Fantry at hartford police dept. 860 527 6300 , case number 03-53989 .

    I really hope they find the scumbag. I am sorry to hear it. This happens in Florida all the time as well. ( I live near Tampa Bay). We need tougher enforcement of the laws.

    thats just wrong. there is no reason why people need to steal . they should be more like us . work hard save up and make something of ourselves. i know you all are hard workers . i am getting offered a asst. managers job. its up to me if i take it . but would you think i would get their if i stole . no . and this is why i think about when i hear these things. people can do so much more for themselves if they stopped stealing

    I have no idea if the coin stolen is the coin being offered on eBay or not, but I think its pretty unfair to start throwing around that kind of accusation, even in jest.

    Now, if the guy who reported the theft ('nickel') thinks it the same coin then that would be different.

    Who said it was the person selling it....I sure as hell didn't....What we've got here is the POSSIBILITY of the coin in question! The possibility of it being the one in question is about a 50/50 probability. scenario...Thief lifts coin, takes to shop, sells coin for WAYYYYYYYYYY below list price. Coin shop buyer could be primary, secondary or even tertiary buyer.....Who knows. No ACCUSATIONS here just speculation.

    I was in no way implying that is WAS the coin in question, but my guess is that the thief will try to put it out on the market somehow, so to catch him every coin of that date/type that comes up should be examined, no?

    Yes, I have heard of many stories of jewelry and collectables thefts where the theif usually takes them out of town a reasonable distance and then offers them to coin shops and/or pawn dealers, usually within a few hundred mile radius.

    The time frame is a close fit also. Theft occured on the 16th and the listing was on the 22nd. I'm not insinuating anything, just stating facts.

    Seller goldeneagles had previously listed this coin on ebay, a listing that ended on 11/20/03. If you assume that it was a seven day listing, as all of his listings seem to be, it makes it impossible for the stolen coin and the ebay coin to be the same.

    My icon coin and the stolen coin are the same issue (mine is NGC-55). However, I have many witnesses to the fact that I have been using this icon for quite some time. I also have a sales receipt and a cancelled check!

    It certainly would have been cool if the message board solved the case. Personally, I do not see more than 1 in 100 of these stolen coin cases being solved. Unless the coin is a very rare coin with well-documented features and the thief is really stupid, that is. It would be very easy to make most coins "disappear."

    Ok...Ok...Maybe the gavel was dropped too early:
    1) Small horizontal scratch on neck and hair area ,and a mark between the 8 and 0 in the date
    2) Cap links to auction (can someone blow it up to exclude #1?)
    3) RYK ASSUMES that it's a 7 day auction
    4) Russ states "It was"..(proof needed) there are people that hold 1 and 3 day auctions
    5) RYK says, in not so many words, that it's a good thing what we do at the forums. I must express that it is a good thing.
    6) I NOW say, "don't count the chickens b-4 they're hatched!"
    7) Case is now RE-OPENED....image

    At the bottom of the ebay listing that ended on 11/20/03 (Ebay #2203578289), the auction listing included:

    "Start Time: Nov-13-03 19:40:21 PST
    End Time: Nov-20-03 19:40:21 PST"

    Case closed!

    Many interesting points have been brought up . As we all know , or have read coin world , numismatic news , or seen flyers being distributed at shows , there are other unfortunate incidents such as this one . Sometimes , items are recovered , and returned , and guilty parties dealt with . We need to try , otherwise it will get to easy next time . Supposedly , the the 'alleged' party had a 'seizure' at the show . No one is sure if there was an accomplice , or if someone else happened to be there and saw the coin wherever , and just picked it up . It is suspected , that the guy with the seizure passed it to someone else . There was commotion , the paramedics arrived , excitement over , coin missing . Thanks to all who read this post . From our location , eight hours drive would cover montreal to the north , buffalo to the west , and richmond to the south . I did not get a copy of the particulars until the week after , in the westford mass show of nov 23 . I am scheduled to be at the baltimore show dec 3-6 and will hand out the flyer there at the table registered to steves rare coins .

    TTT. The previous owner of the coin briefly talked to me at the White Plains show. He is a smaller part-time dealer who didn't deserve for this to happen. One of the good ones. Please keep your eyes and ears open fellow forum members.
