Depends on the story but I would chalk it up to luck.

A girl came into the store yesterday where I work. She wanted 50.00 for her coin. The boss had never seen one before and asked me if it was real. I said yes it was real. So they gave her 50.00 for it. I asked the boss could I buy it and he said sure. So I RAN!!!!...to the ATM and took out 50.00 and bought the coin. 1992 Liberty.

Why did she walk into the store to sell it? Is it a coin store? Be careful, because the coin could be stolen.

    Ouch.

    For her.

    Quite a score for you!

Hope it isn't stolen, and hope the girl doesn't realize her mistake later.

I would say if you call that cherrypickin', you just picked the whole ORCHARD.

No.....not a coin store. Its a Fed Meyer store. She said she had one more at home and her mom gave them to her.
I am aware it could be stolen.....and if it is.....I will gladly give it back. I am going to read the papers for the next couple of weeks to see if anyone reports stolen coins. In the mean time......I will stare at it often to remind myself of the good luck I had that dayimage If even for a short while.

    Isn't it cash?

How do you prove cash is stolen???

Unless of course you have the serial numbers, but coins don;t have serieal numbers.

I think you'd have a hard time proving that particular piece was the piece that was stolen.

With that said, if the person came back in seems like you'd do the right thing and return it.

    Good luck!

I'd do the right thing and return it to her. Just my opinion.

I work at this store.....and if I saw the girl again I would not know her from Adam. I am the teller at this store. I'm sure the cashier who traded her the cash for the coin would recognize her if she came back in looking for it. I would gladly return it. I'm thinking that either she took it from her parents.....or it was a gift from a family member and she had no clue what she had.

I would say about 15. The cashier asked her more than once was she sure she wanted to trade it for cash and the girl said yes.
She said her mom gave it to her and she had one more at home. I realize it could all be BS.

I am not going to tell you what to do but that sounds more like taking candy from a baby than cherrypicking to me. Maybe I am just an old fart.

Before we rag too hard on honeywah, let me ask what each of you would have done?
Is it likely the coin was a gift such as the girl stated? Probably not, but do we know? Did honeywah do anything illegal? No. Unethical? No. Short of knowing the history of the item or even a tinsy winsy trace of evidence to the contrary you're left taking the seller at her word.

I am not a coin collector so to speak. I am more into just picking up errors from work that I might find. I am as green as they come.
I knew it was worth more than 50.00. But it really didnt dawn on me that it could be worth 400.00. I have let them know at the store if they have any angry parents who come in that they know who has the coin and that I told them I would gladly return it. The girl was insistant on selling it . She was asked more than once was she sure. I was not there but i talked to the cashier who did the exchange.

Not much she could do since she wasn't the one who accepted it or had interaction with the kid. But, as for me, I would at least try to contact the kid and/or her parents and swap it out for a $50 bill. If that wasn't possible there wouldn't be much I could do. I wouldn't feel right about not trying to, though.

Oooops, sorry, didn't realize she was a she...edited to fix gender. image

I think you did the 'right' thing by doing that. Hey, if they no one hears from them, not much else you can do except keep it. image

You've done all you can at this time.Don't feel quilty.I would have done the same in your place, and given the same circumstances.I'm not afraid to admit it here openly.Even you didn't know the true value when you offered to purchase it.All you knew was it was worth more than face value.
