proof sets for nieces and nephews

Since my brothers started having kids, I've given them mint proof sets for their birthday starting in the year they are born and a new one every year on their birthday. Of course, me and the wife give them other "more appropriate" kids gifts too.

Does anyone else do this, or any other numismatic gift giving as a tradition? (is "numismatic" right? hehehe) My brother thinks its cool, but couldnt care less about the coins I think. Just lookin for ideas of what others do, if anything.

I too have given different Numismatic gifts for birthdays and X-mas.

My mom started buying the 10 coin silvers when they first came out for her grandkids.
Of course they have no interest in them. Hopefully I can convert one of them in the future.

I gave silver proof sets to my niece and nephew starting in 1999. A great gift as it has turned out.

great idea....keep it up. last year I started my niece and da nephew on the state quarter collection, now Grandpa is looking for quarters.

I gave a good friend a 1956 Proof Set. He always wanted one but didn't want to pay the ransom for it.

I give my neice a proof silver eagle every year for her own little collection.. hopefully one day she will appreciate them. if not she can always sell them off and buy whatever she wants when she is eighteen. She always enjoyed playing with them when she was three and four and hopefully will continue.. thank goodness they are sealed in plastic.

I also give out regular SAE's as token gifts to staffers as part of their annual bonus.

This is how I got started collecting. I had a uncle who used to give me buffalo nickles and wheat pennies every time he saw me. None of them in great condition but, it is what got me started collecting.

I give coins for presents whenever possible--birth year proofsets, SAEs for special occasions, Mercs of the recipients birth year and put in a bezel (for the older ladies, aunts, Mothers-in-law, etc.--they love them and Mercury Dimes make a perfect necklace ), gold pieces (the modern $5 bullion variety) in bezels, birth year proof or MS half dollars for my male relatives and friends (eg, gave my brother a PCGS 1947 MS64 Walker on his 50th), recently gave an older friend a nice AU 1928-S Peace dollar for his 75th--he was thrilled. The ideas are endless, not necessarily expensive, and most people enjoy the gifts--the people I give to aren't collectors to my knowledge.

One of my granddaughters shows an interest in my coins, so she always gets something coin related along with her other birthday and Christmas gifts. I tried with the other grand-youngens and they could not have cared less. they probably have lost them or spent them by now.

Years ago...in my college days....my grandfather gave me a mint set. That was 84 or 85, dont remember the set date. :-( Think it was 70's. And, I didnt care back then. No, i didnt spend them, but I'll be ***** if I know what ever happened to them. Havnt seen 'em since college. First time i thought about that in years. wonder if my roomie borrowed them.....

My nephew collects coins so I give him mint sets and an
occasional proof set. He also likes the bigger darkside coins.

I do not give the niece's and nephew's Proof Sets, as there are too many of them. However, I do buy a Proof Set, Silver Proof Set, and an Uncirculated Mint Set for each of my own kids. My Dad did that for my sister and I, so I am passing on that tradition to my kids. Someday, that will be alot of Proof Sets a grandkid will own.

I show my 3 1/2 year old daughter the proof sets and mint sets I got for her birth year from the US and Canada. One generous member actually gave me a mint set from another country, as well.

My next door neighbor's wife is Filipina, so I may give them an old Philippines peso for their son for Christmas.

The Royal Canadian Mint makes way too many numismatic products for me to try to keep up with. I don't even get their proof sets any more since they depreciate so quickly. I figure I'll wait 10 years or until they depreciate to 50% of issue price, whichever comes first.

It's only happening this christmas John; otherwise, it's the usual mint proof sets for the munchkins and my god-son. The morgans are the leftover common dates from my latest auctions. I figure start them early with this newfangled way of COLLECTING coins. Geesh, the old days were so simple and much CHEAPER for a COLLECTOR...
