If never removed from the original mint package (capsule) should all modern commems grade MS69/MS70?

Based on the Mint's quality controls it seems very unlikely to find a commem with ANY flaws. Thus MS69/MS70 is probably about right.

I think MS69/70 might be pushing it a bit. I'd say 68/69, with plenty of 69's, would be more realistic.

I agree witth xpipedreamer. 99% should be 68/69.

No. Many of the coins have haze problems, chemical stains, inferior mirrors, hairlines, spots, etc. I know, I just put together a set of modern commems and got stuck with some real turkeys. I made the assumption that they were all "69's"...big mistake.

Sounds like the results of poor or over dipping. That said, haze seems to have been a problem with certain issues such as the '94 veterans set.

    This is true. imo
I bought 20+ 1997 Law Enforcement uncirculated dollars from the mint. Some of the coins had what looked like tics on them, except the "tics" were located in the same areas of 6 different different coins. At closer inspection these tics seemed to be where the satin finish on the dies had flaked off. This gave the tics a mirror finish that did not break the surface of the coin.
    Has anyone else witnessed this?

fivecents, are you talking about tiny specs on the coin that typically appear shiny?

    NO

Despite the mint's best efforts there are modern commemorative coins that get tiny marks, have flaws in their surfaces because the dies were not perfect or have grown spots or haze over a period of time.

Yes the grades for most modern commemorative coins are pretty high. No, some of them grade in the PR or MS 66 to 68 range because of the problems I mentioned. AND there are a few pieces that grade lower because they have been removed from their holders and impaired.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I submitted a nearly complete collection of raw modern commemoratives. They too came from the US Mint sets and many were purchased directly from the Mint by me. I assumed they all were MS/PR 69 - 70. Boy was I fooled! My gold coins all did good (mostly 69 a few 68). My silver proof coins did bad (mostly PR68 and a few 67 & 69 all DCAM). All of my uncirculated coins did great, just my proof silver did bad. It is better to buy them already graded than to shoot for 69-70s!

I swear some fo my silver proof coins came back hazed and they weren't like that before I sent them!!!

I have some MS & PR 69 First Flight coins listed on eBay, click on my link below:

It seems many slabbed 69's go for the raw price.

    TRUE.
And you loose your butt selling a modern commemorative that grades less than 69.
It will bring more cracked out & raw.

I sent in the proof First Flt Silver Dollar under the quarterly freebie!
Got it back PR68DC.... It's looks just as nice as the other four, still in their mint holders. I dunno? I usually send in two proofs, as my luck has been more 68's than not. When I've sent in two, I always get at least one of them back PR69DC. I suppose I could have sent in another on the submission, and paid for it. It mighta saved me the trouble of now having to look for another, already slabbed, or sending in more of my stash. I know, hooo-hummm....

Submit proof coins in the mylar 2.5x2.5 flips and this won't happen. The slab sealing process can haze proof coins.

My advice is to learn the grade difference between a raw MS68 and a MS69 before submitting groups of modern commems or you can get burnt.image
