help wanted

I bought this coin off ebay last week and I am hoping someone can tell me more about it. I know it is an essai piece but thats about it. I bought the coin because it looked very similar to one of my US pattern coins.

Can someone post an image of a regular issue 1848 10c?

    Here are several links 1848 10 c
    1848 10c
    1848 10c
    1848 10c
These pictures show the possible diversity of the periods 10c coins and all of these are described as essai coins, not regular issue

Here's another, described as a "contest of 10 centimes, rogat piefort"
    1848 contest oiece

Since there seem to be so many essai pieces, maybe the word contest is relevant here. Maybe you have a piece that is not well known-that would be niceimage

Boiler, I think your pattern is stunning. Not only for the well-balanced and graceful design, but the awesome strike and color.

I can see that Darkside patterns are now set to double in price...

I sure hope foreign patterns don't double in price! Not right away at least.image Here is the US pattern that prompted me to buy the French piece. The fact that the price was 300x cheaper didn't hurt either!image

On the US version Barber substituted an eagle for the chicken.image

Boiler, is that essai a billon alloy?

There was no regular issue 1848 10c. France did adopt this obverse in 1849 in the 20 centime & 50c. denoms (ooops, looks like she lost the chicken cap) for a few years but then old Nappy III had his mug put back on the coinage....pity, that!

Thanks Dimitri.image I collect US pattern half dollars.

Mac- I believe the coin is aluminum but it is in a slab so I am not 100% sure. What did France use on the 1849 10c?

Laurent suggested that maybe a design competition was held in 1848 and this was one of the entries.

    << <i>What did France use on the 1849 10c? >>

Ones which were minted in 1809! image

France did not mint that denom. for circ from 1810 to 1851; they resumed in 1852 with the left-facing Napoleon III with the 'goat beard'. The obv. I showed above was finally in use across the spectrum by about 1870 until 1897.

That sounds very plausible. It's a shame the current "comps." in the US can't cut the mustard like in the old days.

Very nice 1/2 dollar patterns, btw......rather "dark" looking.....love that eagle in front of the shield!! image

Mac- The half dollar pattern is actually a black and white ultra cameo but all I have is a scanner and the mirror fields on my silver proof coins always come out "black" image I am hoping to get a digital camera for Christmas and maybe photography lessons?image

Is the 1849 20c struck in a billon alloy? (I accidentaly typed 10c in my previous postimage)

The 20 centime is 90% silver, weight 1.000 gr. (tiny coin), per Krause, the mintage is only 4,877. Heritage sold one (MS65?) a while back. The 1849s are the keys in that design in the 20c. & 50c.

Boiler - French medals by Louis Oscar Roty. Roty's most famous work was "Semeuse" the Sower of seads so famous on French coins.

Very cool! I have soooo much to learn if I am going to play in this neighborhood.image Now where can I get me some of those?
  • farthingfarthing Posts: 3,294 ✭✭✭
Both of these are currently on eBay - seller linasl

Note: once you bid on one of his auctions you WILL be receiving an email each time he puts up more medals for auction. I believe you can opt-out of the emails though.

I do not follow medals by Roty so I am unsure how much these will fetch. Askari will probably have a good idea of their eBay worth.

The great thing is that you don't have to know much, if anything, to play in the Dark!!!
